Researchers concluded their findings &#8220;do not support\u201d routine vitamin D supplements \u201cto prevent fractures and falls&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It comes after some experts had doubted the effectiveness of how the body processes vitamin pills when compared with getting the nutrients from food. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The review looked at the impact of vitamin D, calcium or combined supplementation which appeared to have \u201clittle to no effect\u201d on specific fractures, such as hip fractures, or falls generally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The paper acknowledged that the results may not apply to people with specific bone disorders or people with osteoporosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Experts said exercise such as resistance training has been shown to boost muscle and bone health while \u201chazard assessment\u201d of homes could also prevent falls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Researcher Olivier Mass\u00e9, pharmacy expert at the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l&#8217;\u00cele-de-Montr\u00e9al, in Canada, said: said: \u201cThe findings show that calcium, vitamin D, or combined supplementation does not prevent fractures or falls. Efforts and funding should be redirected from supplementation to ensuring access to proven interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Researchers warned that the sort of people likely to take vitamin supplements may also be more likely to have a healthier life generally including a better diet. This \u201creverse causation\u201d may be behind why previous observational studies suggested vitamin D pills prevent falls and fractures.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Good sources of vitamin D<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when outdoors but the NHS says between October and early March we do not make enough from sunlight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">However vitamin D can also be gained from a small number of foods which include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">oily fish \u2013 such as salmon, sardines, trout, herring or mackerel<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">red meat<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">egg yolks<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">fortified foods \u2013 such as some fat spreads and breakfast cereals<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">liver<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Good sources of calcium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The NHS recommends getting calcium daily through a balanced diet, ideally from dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods.
