{"id":497658,"date":"2026-05-22T16:02:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T16:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/497658\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T16:02:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T16:02:11","slug":"gardai-notified-over-gerry-hutch-stencilled-graffiti-near-polling-station-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/497658\/","title":{"rendered":"Garda\u00ed notified over Gerry Hutch stencilled graffiti near polling station \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed have been notified of graffitied \u201cVote Hutch no.1\u201d images near a polling station in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-central-constituency\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-central-constituency\/\">Dublin Central<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Veteran criminal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-hutch\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-hutch\/\">Gerry Hutch<\/a>, whose face is  included in the stencilled images, is running as an independent candidate in the constituency, where polling is under way today. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The images appeared immediately next to at least one polling station, St Peter\u2019s National School in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/phibsborough\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/phibsborough\/\">Phibsborough<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under the Electoral Act 1992, election posters are prohibited within 100 metres of a polling place within 30 minutes of polls opening or closing, with a person contravening these rules guilty of an offence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hutch\u2019s campaign has been asked if it is responsible for the images appearing, but did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response to a query from The Irish Times, the Dublin Central returning officer said they are  aware of the matter and  appropriate action has been taken. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Graffiti outside the St Peter&#x2019;s National School polling station in Phibsborough. Photograph: Enda O&#8217;Dowd <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAny issue with postering or canvassing near polling stations is a matter for the garda\u00ed as set out in Section 147 of The Electoral Act 1992. The garda\u00ed have been made aware of the matter. DCC (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\">Dublin City Council<\/a>) have also been notified and they are taking steps to remove the offending material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is a matter for the garda\u00ed to investigate if an offence has been committed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The returning officer confirmed that the candidate had also been informed of his obligations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A comment has been sought from Dublin City Council and An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Garda\u00ed have been notified of graffitied \u201cVote Hutch no.1\u201d images near a polling station in Dublin Central.
