{"id":498582,"date":"2026-05-23T05:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T05:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/498582\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T05:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T05:22:14","slug":"man-given-suspended-sentence-for-harassing-female-colleague-with-relentless-sexual-innuendo-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/498582\/","title":{"rendered":"Man given suspended sentence for harassing female colleague with \u2018relentless\u2019 sexual innuendo \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man who harassed a female colleague with \u201crelentless\u201d sexual innuendo in front of co-workers, driving her from her job, has been ordered to pay her \u20ac5,000 compensation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/04\/20\/judge-condemns-manosphere-in-case-of-worker-harassing-female-colleague\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/04\/20\/judge-condemns-manosphere-in-case-of-worker-harassing-female-colleague\/\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to harassing the woman over several months in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judge Keenan Johnson imposed a  2\u00bd-year sentence at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mullingar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mullingar\/\">Mullingar<\/a> Circuit Criminal Court,  suspended  on the condition the accused does not reoffend in the next seven years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court heard the woman had upskilled to a new role in the company, after which the accused began making \u201ccomments of a sexual nature about her\u201d at their workplace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Often it took place in the company canteen, where he told her to \u201cget down on your knees and start sucking\u201d. She was shocked and embarrassed, and put on earphones to avoid hearing him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Five minutes later another colleague came in, and the accused told that man  the victim was \u201cjust sucking me off\u201d and he made a gesture as if he was zipping up his trousers. Various other examples were cited in evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Previously, the victim had told the court the harassment was relentless, humiliating and degrading. It affected her professionally, psychologically and emotionally, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man had claimed his comments had been intended as \u201cbanter or slagging\u201d, but the judge  described them as \u201cvulgar, cheap, malicious\u201d and told him his attitude was \u201ca relic of the past with no place in polite society\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The woman had asked him to stop before making a complaint to their employer, the court heard. Her brother also spoke to the accused about his  behaviour but the man  claimed it was \u201ccraic\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/05\/22\/daniel-tatlow-devally-says-arms-plant-break-in-motivated-by-urgent-humanitarian-concerns\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dubliner Daniel Tatlow-Devally says German arms plant break-in motivated by \u2018urgent humanitarian concerns\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The woman resigned and got a new job, which she enjoys, the court was told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After being arrested, the man described the harassment allegation as \u201cbulls**t\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While speaking to the investigating garda, he called the woman a poisonous bitch and an attention seeker who was using him as a scapegoat because she was leaving work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Later, he posted a video on his social media account saying he wanted to apologise to her. It was played in court, and his defence counsel, Shane Geraghty, conceded the apology seemed \u201chollow\u201d, while the judge branded it \u201ccavalier and smug\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The judge added various terms to the sentence, ordering him to comply with 18 months\u2019 supervised probation, pay restitution in instalments through garda\u00ed, and have no contact with his former colleague for at least 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Johnson said the accused gave no thought to his victim, adding, \u201cHe seemed interested only in his own misguided belief that others thought he was funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He had also said the case derived from a male culture where speaking disrespectfully of women \u201cis excused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2026\/03\/20\/what-is-the-manosphere-and-why-is-everyone-talking-about-it\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2026\/03\/20\/what-is-the-manosphere-and-why-is-everyone-talking-about-it\/\">the manosphere<\/a> and the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2023\/02\/21\/andrew-tate-is-brainwashing-a-generation-of-boys-schools-are-working-to-combat-his-messages\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2023\/02\/21\/andrew-tate-is-brainwashing-a-generation-of-boys-schools-are-working-to-combat-his-messages\/\">the Tates<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man had eight prior convictions \u2013 one for assault causing harm, the rest for traffic offences. He is in his 50s, and married with children.
