{"id":49865,"date":"2025-09-07T22:50:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T22:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/49865\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T22:50:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T22:50:07","slug":"bill-nighy-imelda-staunton-george-mackay-dominic-west-in-sons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/49865\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, George Mackay, Dominic West in &#8216;&#038; Sons&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor Argentina\u2019s Pablo Trapero, best known for his lauded crime drama \u201cThe Clan,\u201d directing his first English-language feature film \u201c&amp; Sons,\u201d feels both new and familiar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAn adaptation of David Gilbert\u2019s eponymous novel co-penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/sarah-polley\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sarah-polley\" data-tag=\"sarah-polley\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Polley<\/a> (\u201cWomen Talking\u201d) and Trapero, the drama, which world premieres Sept. 7 at <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/tiff\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tiff\" data-tag=\"tiff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TIFF<\/a>, centers on world famous writer A.N. Dyer who is shaken by the demise of a close friend. Facing his own mortality, he summons his estranged sons in a bid to reconcile with them. But when they arrive, he reveals something too farfetched to believe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/bill-nighy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bill-nighy\" data-tag=\"bill-nighy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Nighy<\/a> (\u201cLove, Actually\u201d) plays Dyer, Imelda Staunton (\u201cDownton Abbey\u201d) his divorced wife while Dominic West (\u201cThe Crown\u201d) plays a pivotal supporting role. They lead a stellar cast which includes Anna Geislerov\u00e1 (\u201cAnthropoid\u201d) as well as George Mackay (\u201c1917\u201d) and Johnny Flynn (\u201cOne Life) as the older estranged sons while Noah Jupe (\u201cA Quiet Place\u201d) plays the youngest, Andy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile he has worked on English-language series before, \u201cEcho 3\u201d for AppleTV+ and multi-lingual skein \u201cZeroZeroZero,\u201d \u201c&amp; Sons\u201d is indeed Trapero\u2019s first English-language film but also marks the first time that he has worked with an impressive number of BAFTA-winning and\/or nominated actors in one project. And in the case of Nighy and Staunton, Oscar-nominated to boot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe notable pedigree also lies behind the camera. It\u2019s scored by Emmy-winning \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/the-white-lotus\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-white-lotus\" data-tag=\"the-white-lotus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The White Lotus<\/a>\u201d composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer. Multi-Emmy winning casting maven <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/nina-gold\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nina-gold\" data-tag=\"nina-gold\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nina Gold<\/a> (\u201cBaby Reindeer\u201d) assembled the stellar cast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTrapero notes: \u201cI\u2019ve been making films for many years, and my cast\u2014especially Bill, Imelda and Dominic\u2014are internationally acclaimed, well-established actors. And yet, they approached every line as if it were their first film, with the same passion and drive to give the best possible performance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a way, \u201c&amp; Sons\u201d reminds him of his last film \u201cThe Quietude\u201d or even \u201cThe Clan\u201d or \u201cRolling Family,\u201d all of which bear themes he\u2019s always been deeply interested in exploring: \u201cNot just [about] the family we\u2019re born into, but the bonds we form with those around us. That emotional circle can be your blood relatives, your friends, your co-workers\u2014it\u2019s the group that gives us a sense of belonging\u2026 or, just as powerfully, the feeling of not belonging anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn adapting the story, he decided to set it in the U.K. instead of the novel\u2019s original New York setting. \u201cThe story moves in a slightly abstract house, in a somewhat undefined setting. While you might recognize Oxford or certain parts of London, the heart of the story unfolds in a more ambiguous space. It could be any house, in any city\u2014or in this case, somewhere quiet and removed from the noise, like the countryside,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere was a real sense of care and mutual respect on set,\u201d he relates, adding: \u201cThe scenes we were filming didn\u2019t resemble anything I had done before\u2014and the same was true for Bill. Every time we approached a new line, it was about discovering its meaning, its weight. The same went for a close-up or a specific camera movement\u2014finding the value in each choice.
