Windows updates have been a long-running frustration for a billion-plus PC users. Now that\u2019s finally changing. And when Microsoft\u2019s own support team starts pushing the change, you know something seismic is happening.<\/p>\n
Per Windows Latest<\/a>, \u201cthe overarching philosophy behind Windows updates has been to force them onto our PCs as quickly as possible,\u201d but now Microsoft is \u201cchanging its tune in a somewhat surprising acknowledgment of user frustration.”<\/p>\n Forbes\u2018What Matters Most\u2019\u2014Google Is Changing Your Gmail InboxBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n Microsoft\u2019s new post<\/a> on X, telling Windows users to \u201cpause Windows updates\u201d if you\u2019re in the middle of something, should be business as usual. But it\u2019s not. The option flagged in the post is to \u201cpause for 1 week,\u201d but that\u2019s just the start.<\/p>\n Microsoft is actually working on \u201ca new \u2018Pick a date\u2019 feature,\u201d Windows Latest explains. \u201cThis new calendar in the Windows update page allows you to pause updates for up to 35 days at a time. More importantly, once that 35-day window approaches its end, you can simply open the calendar and extend the pause.\u201d<\/p>\n In fact, you can \u201ctheoretically\u201d do this over and over and push Windows updates out indefinitely. Clearly, that\u2019s not a good move, as you\u2019d open your PC to risks from unpatched vulnerabilities, but it\u2019s nice to have the option anyway.<\/p>\n There are now so many updates, including fixes for failed updates<\/a>, that Windows Latest suggests \u201cMicrosoft\u2019s sudden push to make Windows updates less intrusive is actually them finding a solution to a problem that they created.\u201d<\/p>\n Forbes\u2018Never Google\u2019\u2014Save These Phone Numbers Before You TravelBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n Maybe so. What\u2019s undoubtedly true is that the optionality to control the timing<\/a> and intrusiveness of updates<\/a> has been well received. I have not yet heard from a Windows user that does not welcome the change.<\/p>\n But the warning is critical. The indefinite delay, theoretical though it may be, is not a good idea. Users should be given a deadline, which still provides the control needed without putting PCs at risk. This should be the same for all major platforms.
