{"id":500146,"date":"2026-05-24T08:12:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T08:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/500146\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T08:12:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T08:12:21","slug":"raul-sanchez-splashes-old-sailors-home-with-modern-details","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/500146\/","title":{"rendered":"Rau\u0301l Sa\u0301nchez splashes old sailor&#8217;s home with modern details"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spanish practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ras-arquitectura\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rau\u0301l Sa\u0301nchez Architects<\/a> has renovated a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/spanish-houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home<\/a> in Mataro, Spain, which belonged to a sailor in the 19th century, updating its interiors to suit the lifestyle of his descendant who lives there now.<\/p>\n<p>The property was originally two separate dwellings that were merged in 1865 by sailor Antoni Cuyas, who wanted to pass the remaining years of his life in his native Mataro, after spending decades away at sea and doing business in South America.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2324637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/la-casa-del-pirata-house-interiors-spain-raul-sanchez-architects_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x975.jpg\" alt=\"La Casa del Pirata by Rau\u0300l Sa\u0300nchez Architects\" width=\"2067\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>This 19th-century home in the Spanish town of Mataro was originally owned by a sailor<\/p>\n<p>After Cuyas&#8217;s death, the house remained under the ownership of his family and, since 2012, has been occupied by the sailor&#8217;s great-great-grandson Manuel Cuyas and his wife Nuria.<\/p>\n<p>The pair approached <a href=\"https:\/\/raulsanchezarchitects.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rau\u0301l Sa\u0301nchez Architects<\/a> to update the house because they&#8217;d increasingly come to feel as if they were &#8220;living in spaces trapped in a distorted past&#8221;; it was also proving difficult for both of them to work from home.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2327852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/la-casa-del-pirata-house-interiors-spain-raul-sanchez-architects_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x922.jpg\" alt=\"La Casa del Pirata by Rau\u0300l Sa\u0300nchez Architects\" width=\"2186\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The home is now occupied by the sailor&#8217;s great-great-grandson and his wife<\/p>\n<p>They asked the practice to focus on renovating three spaces: the entrance hall, the dining room and the living area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The requirements were simple: to be able to fully enjoy all the spaces, to use the room both as a living room and a workspace, to keep the dining room exclusively for dining, to give the entrance hall a meaningful role within the ensemble, and to restore some of the badly mistreated grandeur the house once possessed,&#8221; the practice said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2324642 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/la-casa-del-pirata-house-interiors-spain-raul-sanchez-architects_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x954.jpg\" alt=\"La Casa del Pirata by Rau\u0300l Sa\u0300nchez Architects\" width=\"2111\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A stainless steel platform inbuilt with desks and a sofa features in the living area<\/p>\n<p>In the living area, the practice has built a stainless steel platform along the room&#8217;s rear wall. The platform angles outward at both ends to form a pair of desks, and then juts inward to accommodate a built-in sofa.<\/p>\n<p>Storage drawers were also incorporated into the platform, each fronted by natural stone knobs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2324644 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/la-casa-del-pirata-house-interiors-spain-raul-sanchez-architects_dezeen_2364_col_21-852x1117.jpg\" alt=\"La Casa del Pirata by Rau\u0300l Sa\u0300nchez Architects\" width=\"1804\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>There&#8217;s also a mirrored TV cabinet with a yellow interior<\/p>\n<p>The living area&#8217;s original ceiling, wallpaper and patterned terracotta-tile floor were preserved, although the latter had to be treated with resin to minimise future wear and tear.<\/p>\n<p>More standard tiling that ran around the room&#8217;s perimeter was removed and replaced with white micromortar to form a starkly contrasting border.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2324648 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/la-casa-del-pirata-house-interiors-spain-raul-sanchez-architects_dezeen_2364_col_29-852x849.jpg\" alt=\"La Casa del Pirata by Rau\u0300l Sa\u0300nchez Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2357\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>In the dining room, new oak floorboards match the existing wainscotting<\/p>\n<p>Several paintings are mounted across the walls, the main one being a gold-framed portrait of Antoni Cuyas. Just opposite, the practice has erected a tall mirrored TV cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Its interior was painted yellow to match the living area&#8217;s bespoke coffee table.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2324650 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/la-casa-del-pirata-house-interiors-spain-raul-sanchez-architects_dezeen_2364_col_34-852x914.jpg\" alt=\"La Casa del Pirata by Rau\u0300l Sa\u0300nchez Architects\" width=\"2203\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Other features include steel bookshelves and a glossy red table by Carlo Scarpa<\/p>\n<p>French doors lead through to the home&#8217;s dining room, where Rau\u0301l Sa\u0301nchez Architects has laid dark oak flooring to complement the existing decorative wainscotting that runs around the edge of the space.<\/p>\n<p>More modern elements were added too \u2013 stainless steel shelves to accommodate the owners&#8217; extensive book collection and a glossy red edition of Italian designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/carlo-scarpa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carlo Scarpa<\/a>&#8216;s Orseolo table.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/10\/22\/raul-sanchez-architects-colourful-details-kitchen-cube\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/psm21-by-raul-sanchez-architects_dezeen_2364_col_sq1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Yellow entranceway by Ra\u00fal S\u00e1nchez Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Ra\u00fal S\u00e1nchez Architects adds colourful details and &#8220;kitchen cube&#8221; to Spanish home\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A discrete climate control system helps to keep the spaces cool.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The considerable technical complexity of the intervention ultimately recedes, allowing the room to recover its former splendour \u2013 not as a museum piece anchored to an idealised past that most often never existed, but as a space that acknowledges its past and history while carrying them into the present,&#8221; the practice explained.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2324631 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/la-casa-del-pirata-house-interiors-spain-raul-sanchez-architects_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1346.jpg\" alt=\"La Casa del Pirata by Rau\u0300l Sa\u0300nchez Architects\" width=\"1496\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The practice also used colour blocking to create a striking red hallway<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in the entrance hall, any later additions that were discordant with the home&#8217;s period features were stripped away, and surfaces were painted an impactful shade of vermillion red.<\/p>\n<p>One of Antoni Cuyas&#8217;
