Nicolas Winding Refn, director of The Neon Demon\u00a0and the upcoming\u00a0Her Private Hell<\/a>,\u00a0has found his next project in\u00a0Maniac Cop.<\/p>\n

Hollywood tried reviving this property back in 2016<\/a>, only for it to morph into a TV show a few years later with Refn as an executive producer. There\u2019s been no word on the show since 2023, but Refn\u2019s now got the free time to get behind the director\u2019s chair (and probably write, since he does with most of his movies). Mubi will foot the bill and handle distribution in North America in other territories. After the box office and awards success of The Substance\u2014and probably Refn\u2019s own pedigree\u2014the studio\u2019s said to be all in on giving this a theatrical release.<\/p>\n

The original\u00a0Maniac Cop, directed by Will Lustig, released in 1988 and starred Robert Z\u2019Dar as an ex-cop back from the dead and killing the brothers in arms who framed him. Despite a cast that also included Bruce Campbell, Richard Roundtree, and Tom Atkins, it didn\u2019t light the world on fire, but it did get two direct-to-video sequels. As far this new one\u2019s concerned, Mubi founder\/CEO Efe Cakarel said it\u2019s \u201cnot a remake in Nicolas\u2019 hands. It\u2019s a resurrection\u2026and he is exactly the filmmaker to reawaken something this iconic.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, Refn himself said the\u00a0Maniac Cop\u00a0has always appealed to him, and the current cultural climate \u201cprovokes an immediate, uneasy reaction. [\u2026] The time has come to unveil a radical new vision where there is no protection, no safety net, only mayhem.\u201d We\u2019ll have more on the new Maniac Cop as production starts in January 2027.<\/p>\n
