{"id":501447,"date":"2026-05-25T07:22:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T07:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/501447\/"},"modified":"2026-05-25T07:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T07:22:11","slug":"millions-of-chinese-consumers-ditch-their-credit-cards-amid-prudent-spending-slow-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/501447\/","title":{"rendered":"Millions of Chinese consumers ditch their credit cards amid prudent spending, slow economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Weak consumer spending and a crackdown on inactive accounts have led to a plunge in the number of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3340182\/trump-urges-cap-credit-card-rates-could-china-follow-suit-online-loans?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">credit cards in China<\/a>, further eating into profitability of the country\u2019s struggling banking sector.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">During the first quarter of 2026, the number of credit cards owned by Chinese consumers dropped to 687 million, 9 million less than the preceding three months, the People\u2019s Bank of China (PBOC) said in a report on payment earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Since the number of accounts peaked at 807 million in September 2022, it has fallen about 15 per cent during a 14-straight-quarter decline.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The trend underscores mounting pressure on Chinese lenders as they face sustained sluggishness in consumer demand, along with a rise in non-performing loans, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>Dong Zheng, an independent analyst who has been monitoring mainland Chinese banks\u2019 credit card businesses for 26 years, said that in terms of transaction value, the mainland\u2019s 12 major listed banks reported an average 11 per cent year-on-year slide on consumers\u2019 purchases of goods and services via their credit cards in 2025, showing retail spending was turning weaker amid a <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3353914\/chinas-economy-shows-signs-strain-april-iran-war-headwinds-grow?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">slowing economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Transaction value generated by credit cards at the 12 listed banks hit an average 1.9 trillion yuan (US$279.3 billion) in 2025, Dong added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumption willingness is still weak.
