(ANI)<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of \u201clooting the public\u2019s earnings in installments\u201d and leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as \u201cInflation Man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u201cThe BJP\u2019s appetite isn\u2019t satisfied even after slapping a central tax of  \u20b91,000 crore daily on petrol-diesel. When international prices were low, they didn\u2019t pass on the benefits to the people, instead, they looted them relentlessly,\u201d Kharge wrote on X, demanding a rollback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">The repeated hikes come against the backdrop of rising global crude oil prices, with India\u2019s crude oil import basket surging to around USD 113 to 114 per barrel from roughly USD 69 per barrel in February, driven by the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">India kept retail prices of petrol and diesel largely unchanged for nearly four years before the recent revisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">Opposition leaders across parties alleged the government deliberately held back increases through assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, and released them the moment polling concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">Gandhi, in a post on X, wrote: \u201cThey raise petrol-diesel prices in installments, so that your pocket keeps getting quietly fleeced. The moment elections ended, petrol-diesel was hiked by  \u20b98. And this rise will just keep happening. Inflation Man Modi\u2019s only job is this, promises during elections, and the rest of the time, attacks on the public\u2019s pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \"><strong>Also Read:<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/petrol-diesel-prices-hiked-by-over-rs-2-5-each-4th-hike-in-10-days-check-rates-in-delhi-kolkata-mumbai-chennai-101779670252177.html\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Petrol, diesel prices hiked by over  &lt;span class=\" webrupee=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u20b92.5 each; 4th hike in 10 days&#8221;&gt;Petrol, diesel prices hiked by over  \u20b92.5 each; 4th hike in 10 days<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">Kharge said that petrol in Delhi stood at  \u20b971.41 per litre when the BJP came to power in 2014 and now stands at  \u20b9102.12, a rise of 43.01%, while diesel has moved from  \u20b956.71 to  \u20b995.20 per litre, a jump of 67.87%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">He further alleged that the Modi government \u201clooted  \u20b943 lakh crore in the last 12 years, making it a loot of  \u20b91,000 everyday,\u201d and pointed out that \u201cshares of HPCL [Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited], BPCL [Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited] and Indian Oil rose 5.8%, 4.44% and 3.90% respectively\u201d on the day of the fourth hike. \u201cProfit over People is BJP\u2019s DNA,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on May 15 on X posted an illustration of himself riding a bicycle with the caption: \u201cIf one has to move forward, then a bicycle is the only option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal on X wrote: \u201cOil prices have risen again. Yet we are still not buying cheap oil from Russia and Iran.
