Manifold served as chief executive of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/crh\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/crh\/\">CRH<\/a> for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement on Tuesday, BP said Manifold would step down as chair with immediate effect. The move comes just months after new chief executive Meg O\u2019Neill was appointed to stabilise the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Amanda Blanc, BP\u2019s senior independent director, said: \u201cAlbert has helped bring a welcome focus and pace to BP\u2019s transformation. However, the board has been surprised and disappointed to learn of governance oversight and conduct issues it deems unacceptable and has taken decisive action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company did not give details of the alleged conduct or governance failings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">BP said board member Ian Tyler would become interim chair. More than 18 per cent of investors voted against his election, after advisory group Glass Lewis raised concerns about governance and recommended that investors oppose his re-election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Shares in BP fell 5.5 per cent on Tuesday afternoon following the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The UK-listed company, which has a market capitalisation of about \u00a382 billion (\u20ac95 billion), has been characterised by instability since its decision to transform itself into a green energy group in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779804673_372_1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Rents and evictions soar as house price inflation slows<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It later reversed its decision but the path to regaining its status as an oil and gas producing heavyweight has been fraught with frequent management upheaval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irishman Bernard Looney was ousted as chief executive in 2023 after admitting he had failed to disclose the extent of past personal relationships with company employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He became the third BP chief executive to leave the company under a cloud since 2007 when Lord John Browne first stepped down following revelations he had lied to a UK court, while Tony Hayward stepped down in 2010 after the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">BP appointed ex-Woodside Energy executive O\u2019Neill in December in a bid to steady the company\u2019s operations, replacing Murray Auchincloss after less than two years in the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tyler said BP\u2019s board had been \u201cvery impressed\u201d with O\u2019Neill since she took on the role.
