(Photo by Gary Hershorn\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>New Yorkers are in for a rare double celestial treat this weekend as a \u201cBlue Moon\u201d coincides with the first \u201cManhattanhenge\u201d sunsets of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday and Friday evenings, the setting sun will align perfectly with Manhattan\u2019s famous street grid, while a seasonal Blue Moon will rise shortly after sunset on Friday \u2014 giving skywatchers a chance to witness two striking astronomical events within minutes of each other.<\/p>\n<p>The combination is expected to draw photographers, tourists and locals onto Manhattan\u2019s east-west streets for one of the city\u2019s most iconic urban skywatching spectacles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Is \u2018Manhattanhenge?\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cManhattanhenge\u201d occurs when the setting sun aligns precisely with Manhattan\u2019s grid of streets, creating the illusion of the sun suspended between rows of skyscrapers.<\/p>\n<p>The phenomenon happens because Manhattan\u2019s grid is rotated about 30 degrees east of true north. As the sunset position migrates northward, approaching the summer solstice, there are four evenings each year when the geometry aligns perfectly with the streets.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/research\/hayden-planetarium\/manhattanhenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/research\/hayden-planetarium\/manhattanhenge\" aria-label=\"American Museum of Natural History\">American Museum of Natural History<\/a>, the first 2026 dates are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e6b202838662ed8137020544149ee7488\">Thursday, May 28, at 8:14 p.m. EDT \u2014 \u201chalf sun on the grid.\u201d<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ef497ab34f011257e209ec9564f9da4f1\">Friday, May 29, at 8:13 p.m. EDT \u2014 \u201cfull sun on the grid.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The \u201chalf sun\u201d event is often considered the more photogenic moment because the sun appears to \u201ckiss the grid,\u201d with half the solar disk dipping below the horizon. On the following evening, the entire disk appears framed between the buildings just before sunset.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Is A Seasonal \u2018Blue Moon?\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second celestial event this weekend is a seasonal Blue Moon \u2014 the third full moon in a season containing four full moons.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the phrase \u201conce in a blue moon\u201d suggests, Blue Moons are not especially rare. Seasonal Blue Moons occur roughly every two to three years, though pairing one with Manhattanhenge creates an unusually photogenic skywatching weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The moon itself will not appear blue in color. Instead, observers can expect to see a bright full moon rising in the southeast after sunset, complementing Manhattanhenge\u2019s golden-orange glow earlier in the evening. The full moon will, of course, occur on the opposite side of the sky to the setting sun. After all, that is why it is full.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where To See Manhattanhenge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best views are from Manhattan\u2019s broad east-west thoroughfares with unobstructed views toward New Jersey across the Hudson River.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended locations include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e7fd2d9966a1ec1afc4f320292a2b2bd2\">14th Street<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ed56e2fdffc16d7ceccd607293dfc91c2\">23rd Street<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e7ba359b506049d9367ea441de3b54e31\">34th Street<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ef26218a5c1c1af3065001fb7207fa623\">42nd Street<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ef6cdc51efdc23434cda46bb5c07119f5\">57th Street<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The American Museum of Natural History also recommends the Tudor City Overpass in Manhattan and Hunter\u2019s Point South Park in Queens.<\/p>\n<p>Neil deGrasse Tyson, who popularized the term \u201cManhattanhenge,\u201d has previously described 34th and 42nd Streets as especially dramatic because of views framed by the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Manhattanhenge Happens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The event is ultimately caused by Earth\u2019s tilted axis and the changing position of the sunset throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sunset point actually creeps day to day along the horizon,\u201d explains the American Museum of Natural History. The sun sets due west only on the equinoxes in March and September. At all other times of the year, its setting position shifts north or south.<\/p>\n<p>As the summer solstice approaches, the sunset point moves farther northwest each evening. Because Manhattan\u2019s grid is angled 30 degrees from true north, the alignment occurs in late May and again in July rather than exactly on the solstice itself.<\/p>\n<p>For many New Yorkers, however, the science is secondary to the spectacle \u2014 a brief moment when the city\u2019s architecture and the movements of the solar system appear perfectly synchronized. Prepare for crowds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u2018Manhattanhenge Effect\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Manhattanhenge is not limited to just two evenings each year. The sun gradually moves through the grid system over several weeks, creating a \u201cManhattanhenge Effect.\u201d Beginning in late May and continuing through July 12, sunset viewers can observe the sun changing position slightly each evening. Before the summer solstice, the sun appears progressively farther north at sunset.
