{"id":505179,"date":"2026-05-27T13:23:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T13:23:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/505179\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T13:23:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T13:23:14","slug":"eu-to-squeeze-us-space-tech-out-of-prized-satellite-airwaves-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/505179\/","title":{"rendered":"EU to squeeze US space tech out of prized satellite airwaves \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIt is time to decide whether we want our skies to be stronger or dependent,\u201d Spain\u2019s Digital Transformation Minister \u00d3scar L\u00f3pez\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/217623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0at a meeting of the EU\u2019s digital ministers last month, backed by France in calling to save the coveted frequencies for European companies in the name of sovereignty. \u201cIt is time to make European satellite industry great again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision will give an edge to European industry, which is increasingly betting on satellites to provide mobile communications and broadband from low-Earth orbit and fill coverage gaps across Europe. It would also land just before the EU is expected to present a much-anticipated tech sovereignty package of proposals to reduce the bloc\u2019s reliance on foreign technology.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission, through secondary law, could also open the EU-oriented frequencies to \u201cgeographically\u00a0neighbouring\u00a0countries\u201d like the United Kingdom and\u00a0Norway, the proposal said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But squeezing U.S. firms out of the band could trigger retaliation from Washington. The head of the U.S. communications regulator\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/214098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously warned<\/a>\u00a0against measures seen as unfairly discriminating against American space companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the changing geopolitical situation, EU-wide satellite connectivity becomes synonymous with resilience, security, and capability,\u201d Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier told POLITICO in a statement on Tuesday. \u201cSatellite connectivity is a key piece of our technological sovereignty, our security, and our defence, as also highlighted by IRIS2,\u201d he added, referring to the EU\u2019s future satellite constellation to provide secure and high-speed broadband capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius called for the flagship project to get a slice of the frequencies in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1588aee4-0d8e-4c44-b250-843ec015f1f6?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interview<\/a>\u00a0with the Financial Times last week.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal will still have to be negotiated by lawmakers in the European Parliament and EU governments in the Council.
