{"id":507562,"date":"2026-05-28T21:26:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T21:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/507562\/"},"modified":"2026-05-28T21:26:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T21:26:12","slug":"tom-hardy-was-not-fired-from-mobland-discussions-underway-for-his-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/507562\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Hardy &#8216;Was Not Fired&#8217; From &#8216;MobLand,&#8217; Discussions Underway for His Return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/tom-hardy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tom-hardy\" data-tag=\"tom-hardy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Hardy<\/a> was not fired from \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/mobland\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mobland\" data-tag=\"mobland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MobLand<\/a>,\u201d Variety has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDespite <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/tv\/news\/tom-hardy-fired-mobland-season-3-1236757052\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rumors swirling since last week<\/a> that the actor would not return for a third season, sources confirmed discussions are underway to find a way for Hardy (who plays gangster Harry Da Souza in the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/paramount-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paramount-2\" data-tag=\"paramount-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paramount+<\/a> show) to come back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTom was not fired, the door is not closed for Season 3 and things are being worked through creatively,\u201d a source close to production told Variety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe show, which stars Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren as the heads of a British crime family, was co-created by Ronan Bennett and Jez Butterworth and is produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/david-glasser\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-glasser\" data-tag=\"david-glasser\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Glasser<\/a>\u2018s 101 Studios, along with MTV Entertainment Studios. Guy Ritchie is an executive producer and directed a number of episodes across both seasons. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSeason 1 of \u201cMobLand\u201d dropped in 2025 and fast became one of the most-watched shows on Paramount+. Season 2 has wrapped but is yet to launch, while Season 3 was set to go into production \u2014 with Hardy reprising his role as Da Souza \u2014 this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m sure Guy is probably pushing David Glasser to make it work,\u201d a production source told Variety. \u201cGuy likes working with Tom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tReports Hardy would not be returning for Season 3 after falling out with Butterworth and Glasser first appeared in Puck. Variety understands the tensions were real, but that Hardy was not officially fired and the trio are currently trying to resolve their creative differences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe cause of the fallout is a combination of factors, including reports of Hardy\u2019s tardiness on set and insistence on re-writing some of the script, multiple sources confirmed to Variety. But insiders note that there is apparently fault on both sides. \u201cHe\u2019s difficult, but he\u2019s a movie star,\u201d a second production source said. Others pointed out that the tensions could have been amicably resolved sooner, but the leaks from production \u201csources\u201d alleging that Hardy has been fired have inflamed the situation, and are causing this drama to drag on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPer sources, Hardy was displeased because Butterworth was delivering scripts late, sometimes just a week before shooting \u2014 which clashed with the star\u2019s ability to rehearse (\u201cTom likes to prepare,\u201d the second source said).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tButterworth was also not present on set, meaning he could not deal with script issues as they arose. \u201cThe only people [Butterworth] really speaks to is David Glasser,\u201d said the production source. \u201cVery few people on the cast or crew have anything to do with Jez. We never see him.\u201d (The other production source disputed this, saying Hardy has been present on weekly Zoom meetings with Butterworth and Glasser).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHowever, Butterworth\u2019s absence on set proved difficult when Hardy requested the occasional script change. \u201cOften his ideas are very sound,\u201d the source said of Hardy. \u201cAnd he wants them taken seriously. Jez kind of hasn\u2019t got the time to deal with those notes, so it becomes problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBesides \u201cMobLand,\u201d Butterworth has been working on another Paramount+ show, \u201cThe Agency,\u201d plus Sam Mendes\u2019 upcoming Beatles biopics. (Variety understands that Butterworth was also not present on the set of \u201cThe Agency\u201d Season 2 as it was shooting last year.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Jez is basically spread too thin. He\u2019s taken on too many jobs,\u201d the second source said. A rep for Butterworth did not respond to multiple emails from Variety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn the episodes directed by Ritchie, Butterworth\u2019s absence wasn\u2019t as problematic because Ritchie has the authority \u2013 and experience \u2013 to fix a script on the fly. \u201cHaving said that, he doesn\u2019t do it very often,\u201d the second source added. \u201cJez\u2019s stuff is pretty bloody good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tButterworth\u2019s absence became more difficult when Ritchie passed the baton to the rotating cast of directors, of which there were three on Season 1. At that point, if Hardy had an issue with a script, \u201cthe director can\u2019t suddenly turn around and go \u2018Well let\u2019s re-write the scene,\u2019 because they don\u2019t have that authority,\u201d the source explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThey also didn\u2019t have much authority over Hardy either. \u201cHe\u2019s used to dealing with some of the best directors in the world,\u201d the source said of the actor. \u201cSo when he suddenly has a jobbing TV director, he struggles and to a certain extent he can walk all over them because they\u2019re intimidated by him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRitchie isn\u2019t intimidated by Hardy \u2014 and consequently, \u201che\u2019s better behaved with Guy,\u201d the source said. The duo also have a longstanding relationship, dating back to Ritchie\u2019s 2008 film \u201cRocknRolla,\u201d in which Hardy appeared. Hardy trusts Ritchie to get the shot and make it work in the edit while Ritchie can tell him to \u201cstop fucking about\u201d and Hardy will take it \u201cin good heart,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTheir rapport is in contrast to relations between Hardy and Glasser. \u201cI think [Hardy] probably personality-wise with struggles with the David Glasser-type of Hollywood producer dynamic,\u201d said the source. \u201cDavid\u2019s a tough guy. He\u2019s a very fair guy, but he\u2019s a tough guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGlasser runs a tight ship and effectively lost patience with Hardy\u2019s requests for re-writes as well as the tardiness, which saw Brosnan and Mirren left to wait \u201cfor ages\u201d until Hardy arrived on set, according to a third source familiar with Hardy\u2019s conduct in Season 1. \u201cDavid is not prepared to be held to ransom by an actor, even if it\u2019s the leading actor. He has a track record for dealing with this kind of stuff,\u201d the second source said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile Hardy\u2019s lateness was \u201cfrustrating\u201d for Mirren and Brosnan \u2013 \u201cany actor is frustrated when they\u2019re made to wait a couple of hours,\u201d the second source said \u2013 there was specifically no friction between Mirren and Hardy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI know she\u2019s said to him a couple of times, \u2018Come on Tom, we\u2019ve been here for ages, let\u2019s get on with it,\u2019 but she\u2019s never appeared to be anti-Tom,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThey dismissed any suggestion that the actors have fallen out over politics. \u201cI\u2019ve never heard of anything political,\u201d the source said, sounding surprised by the suggestion. \u201cI think that\u2019s probably wildly unhelpful and untrue.\u201d The first source close to the show also categorically shut down the rumors, saying they were unfounded and not true of Mirren\u2019s nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHelen is not that sort of person,\u201d the second source agreed. \u201cIf she had a problem with Tom, she would have said to his face, \u2018Look come on, let\u2019s just stop wasting everyone else\u2019s time and let\u2019s get on with it.\u2019 But that\u2019s probably as far as it went. She\u2019s not the sort of person who\u2019s going to get involved in a whole political situation. She just isn\u2019t. She certainly isn\u2019t going to be one who stamps her feet and says \u2018Well I\u2019m not coming back if he\u2019s in it.\u2019 It\u2019s just not her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t(Mirren\u2019s rep did not respond to multiple emails but after this story published the actor posted a photo of Hardy on her Instagram page, writing over it: \u201cLove you now and always helen\u201d.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile the second source acknowledged that Hardy has long had a reputation for being difficult (Charlize Theron famously fell out with him on the set of \u201cMad Max\u201d while his \u201cStar Trek: Nemesis\u201d co-star Patrick Stewart called him \u201codd\u201d and \u201csolitary\u201d), they felt his behavior isn\u2019t deliberate. \u201cTom gets slightly lost in his own little world sometimes I think,\u201d said the source. \u201cI don\u2019t think he does it maliciously. I don\u2019t even know if he particularly thinks he\u2019s really doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn particular, the actor needs time in the mornings to \u201cfind his approach\u201d to a scene and his character. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t always tune in with everybody else\u2019s [approach] but he\u2019s got a good heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut the source acknowledged: \u201cHe\u2019s well known for being tricky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSo what does it all mean for the future of \u201cMobLand\u201d? Most immediately, it\u2019s believed that Hardy is still needed to complete some Season 2 reshoots, so his return would be ideal. More longterm, the production source was confident the show can continue without Hardy, should a compromise not be worked out: \u201cI think you\u2019d probably lose a fair amount of viewers, but I think it would be quite easy to carry on.\u201d Brosnan, Mirren and Paddy Considine are \u201cgreat actors\u201d who still draw an audience, added the source, noting that Hardy\u2019s fee could be spent on some starry guest actors. \u201cI could think of ten ways they could write him out but they\u2019re not very elegant,\u201d said the source. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit like the same way [\u2018Yellowstone\u2019] got rid of Costner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRecasting Hardy\u2019s role is highly unlikely, however. \u201cI would certainly imagine if Guy had anything to say about it he\u2019d probably be wanting to patch it all up because he knows how integral Tom is to the success of it,\u201d said the source.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUltimately the question is whether Hardy, Glasser and Butterworth can patch things up especially since Hardy was already unenthusiastic about returning for Season 3 due to his conflict with Butterworth. \u201cIt wouldn\u2019t surprise me if this isn\u2019t all a lot of hot air and somebody\u2019s overheard something, David\u2019s thrown his toys out the pram and Tom\u2019s thrown his toys out the pram,\u201d the source said. \u201cThey\u2019ve always had a very volatile relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut with both Ritchie and Paramount+ (which has mostly been keeping an eye on things but staying on the sidelines as the situation works itself out) rooting for a truce, don\u2019t write Harry Da Souza off just yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJoe Otterson contributed to this story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tom Hardy was not fired from \u201cMobLand,\u201d Variety has confirmed.
