{"id":509382,"date":"2026-05-29T22:06:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T22:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/509382\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T22:06:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T22:06:23","slug":"whats-going-on-at-gript-irelands-answer-to-fox-news-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/509382\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s going on at Gript, Ireland\u2019s answer to Fox News? \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is Ireland\u2019s answer to Fox News and the plethora of right-wing media that have sprung up across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/\">UK<\/a> over the last decade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With a particular focus on hot-topic issues such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\">immigration<\/a> \u2013 and particularly any crime involving immigrants \u2013 Gript has quickly carved out a place for itself on the Irish media landscape since 2019. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Thanks in part to viral videos of protests over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-protection-accommodation-service\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-protection-accommodation-service\/\">International Protection Accommodation Services<\/a> (Ipas) centres and press conferences where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\">Government<\/a> Ministers struggle to answer awkward questions, Gript has tapped into the frustration of those who believe other media ignore public discontent over these matters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gript was accessed by 5 per cent of Irish adults on a weekly basis in 2025, according to a report by media regulator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/coimisiun-na-mean\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/coimisiun-na-mean\/\">Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHow much more imported violence are we meant to ignore?\u201d screamed one of the headlines on a report on Friday written by Niamh U\u00ed Bhriain, who is a co-owner of the company behind Gript and its assistant editor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Also featuring on the Gript site was a remarkable statement about the resignation of its founding editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-mcguirk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-mcguirk\/\">John McGuirk<\/a>, which made public serious allegations against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/05\/29\/john-mcguirk-resigns-from-gript-amid-deepening-acrimony-with-former-colleague\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John McGuirk resigns from Gript amid deepening acrimony with website\u2019s co-ownerOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So, what is going on in Ireland\u2019s most prominent conservative media organisation?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McGuirk was the most high-profile of Gript\u2019s writers when he was appointed editor of the website in 2019. He had been a spokesman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/declan-ganley\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/declan-ganley\/\">Declan Ganley<\/a>\u2019s Libertas group when it campaigned against the Lisbon Treaty in 2008 and 2009. He was then a spokesman for the Save the Eighth campaign that unsuccessfully campaigned for a No vote in the 2018 referendum to legalise abortion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As Gript editor he was involved in a number of controversies, most notably when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2024\/02\/09\/man-falsely-accused-of-being-a-suspect-in-parnell-square-stabbing-sues-gript-news-site\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2024\/02\/09\/man-falsely-accused-of-being-a-suspect-in-parnell-square-stabbing-sues-gript-news-site\/\">Gript named the wrong Algerian man<\/a> as being a suspect for the stabbing of a schoolgirl on Parnell Square in 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McGuirk was suspended by Gript in late March after he was accused of a \u201cconflict of interests\u201d by having an \u201cinappropriate relationship\u201d with a person he manages \u2013 an allegation McGuirk has denied. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Separately, another female member of Gript\u2019s staff made an allegation that McGuirk sexually harassed her on a work trip to the Battle of Ideas event in London in October 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As McGuirk said in a video he published on Friday, he is alleged to have \u201cstarted stroking her thigh\u201d before moving his hand \u201ctowards her pelvic area\u201d while they were seated at a public event with other people in the room. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The woman has also alleged that on the following day McGuirk held her hand so their fingers interlocked and this made her feel uncomfortable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The woman says McGuirk later texted her to apologise if he had overstepped any boundaries. He is alleged to have said that if the complainant had looked like Ann Widdecombe, he would handled it differently. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In his video, McGuirk dismissed the sexual harassment allegation as \u201cnonsensical\u201d. He said there were independent witness statements from people who saw no such activity and who said the woman praised his conduct towards her that weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Whatever internal investigation Gript planned into the allegations will now stop as McGuirk has resigned. He launched a new podcast with Sarah Ryan last week and has been added to the roster of writers for Statement, a new conservative website based in Slovakia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The fallout between McGuirk and Gript came on the back of heated disputes about editorial, management and financial matters at the website. Gript\u2019s subscription model charges between \u20ac10 and \u20ac50 a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In addition to U\u00ed Bhriain, a former anti-abortion election candidate and a director of the Pro-Life Institute, the company\u2019s other co-owner is Evelyn Porter. Both are the company\u2019s directors. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gript Media\u2019s financial accounts up to the end of 2024 do not reveal the company\u2019s turnover or list any payments to directors. The company had\u20ac3,232 cash in the bank at the end of the year but its overall financial position was \u20ac5,611 in the red.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A source familiar with the company\u2019s financial position said its annual income was approaching \u20ac600,000, with about 4,500 paying subscribers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Emails seen by The Irish Times from February show there was pressure on McGuirk to make cuts to the amounts paid to prominent columnists such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kevin-myers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kevin-myers\/\">Kevin Myers<\/a> and Cormac Lucey after income dropped to \u20ac47,500 a month and reserves were depleted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The media company has been seeking investment from the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While U\u00ed Bhriain\u2019s title in Gript is \u201cassistant editor\u201d, both she and her sister \u00dana Nic Mhath\u00fana are said to have the ultimate editorial say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McGuirk complained internally that Nic Mhath\u00fana had \u201cbullied\u201d him because she opposed his stance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a>. Nic Mhath\u00fana reposted an alleged \u201canti-Semitic\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/x\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/x\/\">X<\/a> post that called him \u201cRabbi John McGuirkstein\u201d last December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The post was later deleted. Nic Mhath\u00fana declined to comment this week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An email from Gary Kavanagh, Gript\u2019s assistant editor, to McGuirk in February took McGuirk to task over his performance as editor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cNiamh is the majority owner and she is entitled to define the broad shape within which editorial should function,\u201d Kavanagh wrote in the email, seen by The Irish Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is always expected to be a degree of tension between ownership and the editor \u2013 that\u2019s normal and can be healthy. But your lack of a cohesive editorial vision, or at least a lack of desire to communicate that vision, combined with the manner in which you conduct these discussions, has led to you losing arguments you really did not need to lose. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cUltimately, editorial direction operates within the boundaries set by the owners. Refusing to implement their directives is not editorial independence; it\u2019s insubordination. We both serve at the behest of Niamh and \u00dana, and a key part of your role is being able to maintain a relationship with them which is productive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Referring to Nic Mhath\u00fana\u2019s X post, Kavanagh said he spoke to her and was told \u201cshe didn\u2019t read it closely and didn\u2019t think of how it would be perceived, and that her intention was not anti-Semitic\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, Gript said no editorial matters had led to McGuirk\u2019s suspension. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is an employment matter where the alleged unacceptable conduct of Mr McGuirk, in his capacity as editor of Gript, was brought to Gript\u2019s attention and was to be investigated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said McGuirk\u2019s resignation was received 90 minutes before a deadline to launch external investigations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur view is that Mr McGuirk has treated this process with contempt from the start, breaking confidentiality repeatedly and then presenting a public face suggesting he is the aggrieved party.
