\n\tSinger-songwriter Niall Horan<\/a> is opening up about Liam Payne<\/a>, saying there is \u201clight and shade\u201d to the grief he feels over the death of his One Direction<\/a> bandmate.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new interview with The Times U.K.<\/a>, Horan remembered spending time with Payne in Argentina just a couple of weeks prior to his death in October 2024.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m glad of that, it means my last memory of him was happy,\u201d Horan said. \u201cIt still feels surreal. On day one I was, like, \u2018Nah, it didn\u2019t happen.\u2019 Our friendship was a bond that was there forever even if we hadn\u2019t seen each other for a while and it\u2019s wild that one day, like the flick of a switch, he\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Irish musician said he is in touch with Payne\u2019s relatives: \u201cAll our families are in touch, they shared those experiences too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued, \u201cWhen I think of Liam\u2019s passing, there is sadness, but it also makes me laugh and smirk because of the memories we had. I\u2019ll go to places and think of something stupid in a hotel or something random that makes me laugh. We always had good fun in Australia because we were able to get out and go to the beach. Liam wasn\u2019t too bad at surfing. I can barely swim.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHoran \u2014 who, alongside members Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik, released solo albums in the aftermath of the group\u2019s disbandment \u2014 has included a tribute song to Payne on his forthcoming album, Dinner Party, called \u201cEnd of an Era.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe have this shared thing,\u201d he said of his bandmates, \u201cbut so do the fans; they had a loss too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPayne\u00a0died at the age of 31<\/a>\u00a0in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after falling off a balcony from a hotel\u2019s third floor. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked by the publication if One Direction would ever reunite, Horan responded: \u201cGod knows.
