Brown-Forman is temporarily shutting down production at its Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery, another sign that the whiskey slowdown is starting to hit even some of the industry\u2019s biggest players.<\/p>\n

The news was first reported by Robb Report<\/a>, which cited a statement from Brown-Forman confirming the production pause at the County Meath distillery.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemand planning and production forecasting are critical parts of our business; standard practice requires adjusting production to align with market conditions,\u201d a Brown-Forman spokesperson told the publication.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a robust supply of maturing whiskey, ensuring there will be no interruption in the availability of Slane for our customers worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company added that Slane\u2019s visitor center<\/a> will remain open, and tours will continue for trade and VIP guests.<\/p>\n

Another tough stretch for Brown-Forman<\/p>\n

The pause comes during a rocky period for Brown-Forman as a whole. The maker of Jack Daniel\u2019s<\/a> has spent the past year navigating declining spirits sales, softer consumer demand, layoffs, and growing investor pressure as the broader whiskey market cools after years of explosive growth.<\/p>\n

The company has also been the subject of acquisition rumors in recent months, reportedly turning down interest from both Sazerac and Pernod Ricard. At the same time, Brown-Forman has been tightening operations across parts of its whiskey portfolio.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the company paused production at Scotland\u2019s Glenglassaugh Distillery and shifted operations into what it called a \u201cshared production model\u201d with Benriach.<\/p>\n

Now Slane joins that list.<\/p>\n

Brown-Forman originally acquired Slane Castle Irish Whiskey in 2015, betting big on the booming Irish whiskey category. Not long after, the company invested roughly $50 million to build a sleek, modern distillery on the grounds of the historic Slane Castle Estate, located about an hour outside Dublin.<\/p>\n

The property itself is legendary in Ireland thanks to its massive concert series, which has hosted artists including U2, Metallica, Guns N\u2019 Roses, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.<\/p>\n

The whiskey brand was founded by Henry Conyngham, the eighth Marquess Conyngham, alongside his son Alex Conyngham, who became the face of the brand and helped guide its growth over the past decade.<\/p>\n

What happens next?<\/p>\n

For now, Brown-Forman says there should be no disruption to Slane whiskey availability because the company has enough mature stock already aging.<\/p>\n

Still, the shutdown may not be brief.<\/p>\n

According to Robb Report, Slane employee Alan Buckley wrote in a LinkedIn post that the distillery would be closing \u201cfor the next number of years.\u201d Brown-Forman later described the closure as temporary but said any reopening would depend on future \u201cdemand planning and forecasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

That kind of uncertainty is becoming more common across the whiskey industry right now.<\/p>\n

Over the last decade, whiskey producers rapidly expanded production to keep up with soaring demand for bourbon, Irish whiskey, and Scotch. But as inflation, changing spending habits, and slower premium spirits sales hit the market, many companies are now finding themselves with too much inventory and not enough immediate demand.<\/p>\n

Slane built its reputation around an approachable triple-casked Irish whiskey matured in virgin oak barrels, seasoned whiskey barrels, and Oloroso sherry casks. The whiskey became especially popular among drinkers seeking a smoother, cocktail-friendly Irish whiskey that still offered complexity.<\/p>\n

And while the brand isn\u2019t disappearing, the production pause is still a significant moment for Irish whiskey.<\/p>\n

Just a few years ago, Ireland\u2019s whiskey boom seemed unstoppable, with new distilleries opening across the country and major global spirits companies pouring money into expansion projects. Now, the industry appears to be entering a more cautious chapter.<\/p>\n

For whiskey fans, the good news is that Slane bottles should still be relatively easy to find for the foreseeable future.
