{"id":512189,"date":"2026-05-31T21:57:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T21:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/512189\/"},"modified":"2026-05-31T21:57:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T21:57:13","slug":"womens-mini-marathon-until-youre-on-the-start-line-you-cant-grasp-the-magic-of-it-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/512189\/","title":{"rendered":"Women\u2019s mini marathon: \u2018Until you\u2019re on the start line, you can\u2019t grasp the magic of it\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy fight is Gill\u2019s fight,\u201d said the biro scrawl on 10-year-old Ella Barry\u2019s hand as she and her mother Ruth walked to the starting line to join 30,000 others running the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\">Vhi Women\u2019s Mini Marathon<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Strictly speaking, Ella shouldn\u2019t have been there at all, as contestants have to be more than 14, but Ruth and Ella \u2013 who runs with Donore Harriers \u2013 were there for their friend Gill, who is fighting cancer, and in such a context a slight bending of the rules seemed worth it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf it gets tough along the route, I\u2019m going to look down at my hand to remind me why I\u2019m here,\u201d Ella said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her mother nodded. \u201cWe\u2019re not aiming for a particular time but we\u2019re going to finish together,\u201d Ruth said. \u201cIt\u2019s Ella\u2019s first 10k and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\">I want to be at her side<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their story was just one of thousands shared on the streets of Dublin, a city suddenly swamped in purple as tens of thousands of women overran the place to raise money for causes dear to them. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Ruth Anne Barry and daughter Ella Rose Barry,  Ballyfermot, at the women's mini marathon in Dublin. Photograph: The Irish Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since the first mini-marathon was run in 1983, it has raised more than a \u20ac250m for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\">charities across Ireland<\/a>, said race director David O\u2019Leary. It is widely believed to be the most important single-day fundraising event in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cancer research, heart health, homelessness, hospices, the St Vincent de Paul, the fight against motor neuron disease and Parkinson\u2019s disease, the Laura Lynn Foundation, Pieta House, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, Simon and hundreds of personal causes like Ella\u2019s were represented as thousands of women began streaming past the start line on Fitzwilliam Place at exactly 12.30pm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So large was the attendance that more than 30 minutes after the starting pistol sounded, many of the women were still beginning. Meanwhile, a few hundred metres away on Baggot Street, Chaltu Dida from Ethiopia was crossing the finish line having covered the 10km in 31:41.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SOYQWTV5DFGWTFEECRQGT44THU.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sorcha Nic Dh\u00f3mhnaill of Limerick Country Club was second in a time of 32:44, while her twin, \u00cdde, came third in 33:58. Greta Streimiktye from UCD Athletic Club claimed first place in the visually impaired category with a time of 36:03.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">RT\u00c9 Radio presenter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/katja-mia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Katja Mia<\/a> is an old hand at mini-marathons by now and was running her fourth race as an ambassador. She was also raising money for EndoIreland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe first year I was new to running and had a target of 1.15, but I\u2019m not putting pressure on myself this year. I\u2019m here for the vibes, so will probably have a jog and maybe walk for a kilometre or two and then jog again,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sonia O\u2019Sullivan: How mini marathons became part of new women\u2019s liberationOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aimee Connolly of Sculpted by Aimee, another ambassador, was running for the fifth time. \u201cIt is genuinely one of my favourite days of the year . . . If I get below 48 minutes it will be a PB [personal best] but I will be happy with anything less than 50,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She stressed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/athletics\/2026\/03\/06\/sonia-osullivan-how-mini-marathons-became-part-of-new-womens-liberation\/\">time wasn\u2019t everything<\/a>. \u201cUntil you stand on the start line, you can\u2019t really grasp the magic of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Patricia Horgan from Collins Avenue in Dublin 9 was in fine spirits and looking forward to her 44th mini-marathon as one of a handful of women to have competed in every single edition since 1983.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Not even having a pacemaker fitted nearly 20 years ago could keep her away. \u201cMovement is life. if you don\u2019t use it, you\u2019re going to lose it and for me this is therapy,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Lucy Boyd (left) and Lorraine Ennis during the race. Photograph: The Irish Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For Liz Collins, from the Liberties, running in the race is something she does for her 21-year-old daughter, Claudia. \u201cShe has the genetic skin condition Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa and I started running 21 years ago after she was born to raise money for Debra Ireland. I felt a little bit helpless but this gave me a sense that by raising a few bob, I was making a difference. I had a target of two grand and I hit that,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cara Kennedy from Kildare looked pretty serious as she stood on the fringes of the race, anxiously scanning the passing women. \u201cI was put in wave one, the sub one-hour group. But I wanted to run with my cousin and she\u2019s in a different wave so I\u2019m waiting for her. Running with someone is part of the experience.
