{"id":514281,"date":"2026-06-02T07:21:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T07:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/514281\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T07:21:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T07:21:12","slug":"new-north-canberra-hospital-details-unveiled-as-1-34-billion-committed-to-redevelopment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/514281\/","title":{"rendered":"New North Canberra Hospital details unveiled as $1.34 billion committed to redevelopment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A $1.5 billion price tag has been placed on the new North Canberra Hospital, with the redevelopment to include more than 200 inpatient beds, a birth centre and at least 700 additional parking spaces. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Details of the Northside Hospital project \u2014 a 2024 ACT Labor election promise to replace the existing hospital at Bruce \u2014 have been unveiled as part of the ACT government&#8217;s latest budget, with another $1.34 billion committed to the redevelopment over the next seven years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The first stage of the project will include a new seven-storey clinical services building with a &#8220;state-of the art&#8221; emergency department, 14-bed intensive care unit, and eight operating theatres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There will also be a birth centre with six birthing suites, a maternity inpatient unit and a special care nursery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some existing buildings on the northern side of the precinct, including the childcare centre, will be demolished to make room for the main building.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But, there is a new 100-place childcare centre planned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Site map showing the location of the new clinical services building.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/9c6b1673fb50df435fafb058bb184a0a?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&amp;cropH=638&amp;cropW=957&amp;xPos=0&amp;yPos=68&amp;width=862&amp;height=575\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The new seven-storey clinical services facility will be constructed beside the current main hospital building.\u00a0 (Supplied: ACT government)<\/p>\n<p>Construction to begin next year<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Main works on the new building had been slated to start this financial year, but Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said construction was now not expected to begin until 2027-2028.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Partly that is around some of the environmental assessments and some of the detailed design work that&#8217;s just taken a bit longer than we had expected,&#8221; for Canberra&#8217;s entire public hospital system.\u00a0 (ABC News: Luke Stephenson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Stephen-Smith said the staged redevelopment meant not every service in the current main hospital building would be moved into the new stage one building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Mental health, for example, will stay where it is and probably be expanded in its current site until the second stage build,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;And we&#8217;ve done that to ensure that this project is both affordable over the period, but also to minimise disruption through the development process.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Feedback sees parking expanded\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Stephen-Smith said there had been extensive consultation on the hospital&#8217;s design and planning, and feedback on car parking had seen extra spaces added \u2014 taking the total number of parking spots to more than 700.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve certainly heard the feedback from people about parking and anyone who&#8217;s been to North Canberra Hospital recently will find that parking is extremely hard to come by,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But we will also work through other options, particularly during the main works construction phase as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Health &#8216;government&#8217;s first priority&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the government&#8217;s pre-budget announcement, treasurer Chris Steel said health was &#8220;always the government&#8217;s first priority&#8221; and the 2026-2027 budget reflected that, with the additional $1.34 billion taking the total funding for the new hospital to $1.5 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We do provide a high level of service to Canberrans when it comes to health care, and that&#8217;s exactly what our community expects and we will continue to do that,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But we need to invest now in this critical health infrastructure to support acute services on the north side, help take pressure off health services on the south side, and build for the future.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;And that has to happen now, it can&#8217;t wait another 10 years.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8216;Past its used-by date&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Canberra Liberals leader Mark Parton agreed the new hospital was necessary, but said he had concerns about how it would come together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So many aspects of the new components of Canberra Hospital are just not fit for purpose,&#8221;
