\n\tThe new \u201cStargate<\/a>\u201d TV series has been axed at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe show was first announced with a series order in November 2025<\/a>. It hailed from writer, executive producer, and showrunner Martin Gero, who was a writer on \u201cStargate SG-1\u201d and \u201cStargate: Atlantis\u201d early in his career.<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Amazon execs were concerned that Gero\u2019s take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise\u2019s already dedicated fanbase. <\/p>\n

\n\tIt was first reported back in 2022 that Amazon was looking to develop new projects in the \u201cStargate\u201d universe following the company\u2019s acquisition of \u201cStargate\u201d producer MGM Studios. Although Gero\u2019s series will not proceed, Amazon is still exploring new ways to further the franchise. <\/p>\n

\n\tNo plot details were ever released for Gero\u2019s take on the show. Along with Gero, executive producers also included Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures as well as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who co-wrote the original film, which Emmerich directed. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders within the \u201cStargate\u201d universe, served as consulting producers.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cStargate\u201d originally launched as a 1994 movie starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. The film was followed by the hit series \u201cStargate SG-1,\u201d which aired for 10 seasons and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge among others. The spinoff \u201cStargate Atlantis\u201d then aired for five more seasons between 2004 and 2008.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere have also been two direct-to-video \u201cStargate\u201d movies and three other TV shows, with the most recent being \u201cStargate Origins\u201d in 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The new \u201cStargate\u201d TV series has been axed at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.
