{"id":516071,"date":"2026-06-03T06:49:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T06:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/516071\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T06:49:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T06:49:19","slug":"decade-in-best-case-scenario-to-build-new-east-cork-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/516071\/","title":{"rendered":"Decade \u2018in best case scenario\u2019 to build new East Cork road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">It will take 10 years \u201cin a best-case scenario\u201d to deliver a road to ease congestion between two of East Cork\u2019s biggest towns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The N25 Carrigtwohill-to-Midleton upgrade was \u201cpaused\u201d in 2021, delaying plans for a 5km dual-carriageway realignment that would have separated out local traffic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">It has now emerged the project is another decade away, with only a fraction of the funding allocated to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41855358.html\">Cork County Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The council\u2019s head of roads, Padraig Barrett, said: \u201cFour years ago, the estimated cost of building the new road was around \u20ac100m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cAt present, we are six to seven years off construction, and it will then take a further two years to build.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThat\u2019s assuming that all goes according to plan, and we get the required government funding, and we have a positive outcome for the project from An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The council received \u20ac500,000 from the Government this year to reactivate planning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Council officials are engaging with the consultants who drew up the original plans to progress to route selection, and to see if the original plans are valid under environmental legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Need to resolve gridlock<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Barrett said they \u201cneed to resolve\u201d the gridlock in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">One of the major pinch points is the Lakeview roundabout at Midleton, where congestion is extreme, especially during peak hours.
