It stands for Field Imaging Nanosatellite for Crop residue Hyperspectral mapping.<\/p>\n<p>Translating that into plain English \u2014 University of Toronto students are designing a tiny satellite, about the size of a housecat, that can measure the amount of crop stubble on farm fields across Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The students, almost entirely in their late teens or early 20s, are part of the Space Systems program within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utat.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">University of Toronto Aerospace <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utat.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the students are learning how to build a nano-satellite that can map crop-residue from low earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like a friend group (and) we\u2019re developing a satellite, together,\u201d said 21-year-old Ege Artan, a member of the FINCH team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working on a very cool project. REUTERS\/Hollie Adams\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 128px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 128\/96;\"\/><br \/>\n            <\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are other ways to study crop residue across a large geography, such as expensive satellites or drones, but a nano-satellite could be a cheaper option to gauge crop stubble.<\/p>\n<p>The FINCH project will rely on shortwave infra-red sensors.<\/p>\n<p>Shortwave infrared is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from 1.0 to 2.5 micrometers (\u00b5m).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t detectable by the human eye, but it can be captured by specialized sensors on satellites, drones,\u201d says an explainer on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geowgs84.com\/post\/what-is-swir-short-wave-infrared-explained-for-gis-applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GeoWGS84 website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About 150 students are currently involved in the project, including Artan, who spoke to the Western Producer from his home in Turkiye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can already do this with high-priced satellites, but they are incredibly expensive so you wouldn\u2019t want to send them to space just for that purpose (measuring crop stubble).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is a nano-satellite?<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/satellites\/cubesat\/what-is-a-cubesat.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cube-sat <\/a>is another name for a nano-satellite, said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canadian Space <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018cube\u2019 bit comes from the shape of the satellite, which could be as small as a Rubik\u2019s cube.<\/p>\n<p>These nano-satellites have become more popular, as they can be launched into orbit for $50,000 to $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/321640_web1_Image-2026-06-01-at-4.16-PM.jpeg\" class=\"tw:m-0! lazyload\" alt=\"University of Toronto students are building a tiny satellite, which will assess crop stubble on fields across Canada | Source: U of Toronto \"\/><\/p>\n<p>                            The \u201cFINCH\u201d mission patch designed by students at the University of Toronto \u2013 it stands for Field Imaging Nanosatellite for Crop residue Hyperspectral mapping. Photo: University of Toronto<\/p>\n<p>The small cubes are assembled to build a larger cube. In the case of the FINCH project, their nano-satellite is about the size of a housecat or raccoon.<\/p>\n<p>To test their device and if it can effectively map crop residue, the students are collaborating with the <a href=\"https:\/\/emilicanada.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">EMILI <\/a>research farm in Manitoba.<\/p>\n<p>A satellite that\u2019s already in orbit, called EnMAP, will assess the crop residue on five fields at EMILI\u2019s Innovation Farms near Grosse Isle, Man.<\/p>\n<p>That data will help the students \u201cground truth\u201d their technology, said an EMILI release.<\/p>\n<p>If all goes according to plan, the FINCH nano-satellite will be launched in 2028 or 2029, Artan said.<\/p>\n<p>Once in orbit, the next batch of University of Toronto students in the Space Systems program will test the satellite and see if it works as intended.<\/p>\n<p>If the proof of concept is successful, the technology could be deployed in southeast Asia, Africa or any part of the world to measure crop residue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WINNIPEG \u2013 FINCH is a confusing acronym.
