The buzzy horror movie, from YouTuber <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/kane-parsons\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kane-parsons\" data-tag=\"kane-parsons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kane Parsons<\/a>, will hit $100 million on Wednesday after just six days in theaters. Most arthouse releases are lucky to surpass that benchmark by the end of their box office runs \u2014 especially in this current, fractured moviegoing landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNow \u201cBackrooms\u201d ranks as A24\u2019s highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, overtaking the benchmark that was just established by last December\u2019s \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d with $96 million. \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d starring Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet as a ping-pong phenom, remains the indie studio\u2019s biggest film worldwide with $191 million, though \u201cBackrooms\u201d will soon surpass that high watermark, too. Globally, \u201cBackrooms\u201d has earned $144 million to date. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLast weekend, \u201cBackrooms\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/box-office\/backrooms-box-office-kane-parsons-1236763407\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shattered expectations by launching to $81 million domestically<\/a>\u00a0and $118 million globally. The film secured the largest debut ever for A24, more than tripling the record of Alex Garland\u2019s 2024 thriller \u201cCivil War\u201d ($25.5 million). It also delivered the biggest start in history for an original horror movie. Meanwhile, Parsons became the youngest filmmaker with a No. 1 film at the box office, trouncing the benchmark held by Josh Trank, who was 27 when 2012\u2019s \u201cChronicle\u201d launched in first place with $22 million. Given the unprecedented levels of business, it\u2019s unclear just how much the film will earn in its sophomore outing, though analysts are predicting a haul of $48 million to $50 million between Friday and Sunday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cBackrooms\u201d is based on Parsons\u2019 popular web series about liminal spaces \u2014 eerie, seemingly endless rooms and structures that originated on 4chan and\u00a0gained popularity over the years in online forums like Reddit and TikTok. The story follows a furniture store owner (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who finds a secret doorway that leads him to a seemingly endless stretch of nondescript rooms. When he disappears, his therapist (Renate Reinsve) ventures into the unknown to rescue him.\u00a0A24 and Chernin Entertainment co-financed \u201cBackrooms\u201d for roughly $10 million, meaning it\u2019s already hugely profitable.
