US president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin have met in Alaska for a high-stakes summit on the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The two leaders met in Anchorage, shaking hands on arrival before proceeding to the closed-doors meeting.<\/p>\n

Kyiv<\/a> said earlier that it was \u201ccounting on\u201dMr Trump to persuade Mr Putin to come to the negotiating table and end his invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump and Mr Putin were scheduled to begin talks at a US military base in Anchorage at 11.30am local time (8.30pm Dublin time), then continue discussions over lunch with their delegations before addressing the media. <\/p>\n

The pair briefly posed on a stage on which \u201cAlaska 2025\u2033 were written, before leaving the tarmac at the base in the US presidential state car, known as the Beast.<\/p>\n

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov were set to join the three-on-three summit, along with US secretary of state Marco Rubio and special adviser Steve Witkoff.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump has said he believes Mr Putin is ready to end his war on Ukraine and, if that is confirmed at the summit, he will contact Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy soon afterwards to agree a follow-up meeting at which a peace deal could be agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe key thing is that this meeting [in Alaska] should open up a real path toward a just peace and a substantive discussion between leaders in a trilateral format \u2013 Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian side,\u201d Mr Zelenskiy said on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is time to end the war, and the necessary steps must be taken by Russia. We are counting on America. We are ready, as always, to work as productively as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Zelenskiy and a host of European leaders have presented a united front in recent days to insist that they must be involved in discussing crucial questions about Ukraine\u2019s future and continental security.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump has suggested that territorial concessions will be part of a peace deal, while acknowledging that Ukraine must have the final say on that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll be discussed, but I\u2019ve got to let Ukraine make that decision, and I think they\u2019ll make a proper decision, but I\u2019m not here to negotiate for Ukraine. I\u2019m here to get them at a table,\u201d Mr Trump said of territorial issues as he flew to Alaska.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, Vladimir Putin wanted to take all of Ukraine. If I wasn\u2019t president, he would, right now, be taking all of Ukraine, but he\u2019s not going to do it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump also repeated a threat that Russia would face \u201cvery severe\u201d economic consequences if it rejected peace efforts, and said US-Russia business co-operation would be impossible if Mr Putin continued his war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI noticed he\u2019s bringing a lot of business people from Russia, and that\u2019s good. I like that because they want to do business, but they\u2019re not doing business until we get the war stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyiv and its European allies say any peace deal would be worthless without powerful security guarantees for Ukraine that would prevent another Russian invasion.<\/p>\n

Ukraine wants Nato membership but Mr Trump has ruled that out. Moscow is demanding a permanent ban on the country every joining Nato, and the permanent transfer of five Ukrainian regions to the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n

When asked if the US could provide such security guarantees, Mr Trump said: \u201cMaybe, along with Europe and other countries. Not in the form of Nato, because … there are certain things that aren\u2019t going to happen. But, yeah, along with Europe, there\u2019s a possibility of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Korea\u2019s media said on Friday that its leader Kim Jong-un had received a letter from Mr Putin praising their country\u2019s friendship and the \u201cheroic\u201d troops that Pyongyang has sent to help Russia fight Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump said he had a \u201cwonderful talk\u201d with Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko, another close Putin ally.
