Presence and absence. Vitality and stillness. These are just a few of the dualities that permeate the atmospheric work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jeanne_vicerial\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jeanne Vicerial<\/a>, whose textile-focused practice taps into history and femininity with precision and reverence.<\/p>\n<p>A city-wide exhibition of Vicerial\u2019s pieces titled Incarnation: Carte blanche Jeanne Vicerial opens across several historic spaces in Aix-en-Provence this month: Mus\u00e9e du Pavillon de Vend\u00f4me, Mus\u00e9e des Tapisseries, Chapelle de la\u00a0Visitation, and Mus\u00e9e Granet. Situated amid centuries-old architecture and existing museum collections, the artist\u2019s works nod to time, tradition, and remembrance. Photo \u00a9 Laurent Edeline<\/p>\n<p>Known for her dramatic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/2023\/04\/jeanne-vicerial-armors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Armors<\/a> series, Vicerial nods to medieval European heritage, such as knights\u2019 armor and burial and memorial customs. \u201cGisante de c\u0153ur,\u201d for example, which translates to \u201crecumbent figure of the heart,\u201d references the tradition of nobility or priests\u2019 sculptural likenesses placed atop sarcophagi. Except in Vicerial\u2019s world, these figures are all enigmatically, anonymously, and powerfully female. The silhouettes of bodies are conveyed through textile, which in turn is associated with clothing and its potential to both reveal and conceal as well as protect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond practical functions, textiles carry within them a memory: the memory of gestures, of uses, and of the traces left behind by the bodies that have worn or transformed them,\u201d says a statement. \u201cThus, the material becomes a silent witness to past presences\u2014the medium for a history that is simultaneously individual, intimate, and collective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Incarnation opens on June 13 and continues through October 4.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/vicerial-3-edited.jpg\" class=\"swipebox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-474727\" title=\"\u201cGisante (Amnios)\u201d (2022), ropes, threads, and varnished roses, 77 4\/7 x 22 3\/7 x 13 4\/5 inches.
