rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\/\">electricity<\/a> than the residents of all other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a> capitals, according to a European report showing families in the Irish city pay \u20ac1,600 a year for power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish energy suppliers increased prices by \u20ac8 to \u20ac11 per month for electricity in recent weeks as global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oil\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oil\/\">oil<\/a> and gas prices soared following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\">US-Israeli attacks<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">New figures from a Europe-wide report show Dublin is the most expensive capital in the EU for domestic electricity prices, with higher charges than those in leading cities such as Paris or Rome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dublin families pay an average of 38.52 cent a kilowatt hour (KW\/h, the unit in which power is sold) for their electricity, according to May\u2019s Household Energy Price for Europe index.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That translates into bills of close to \u20ac1,600 a year or almost \u20ac270 per bill, which are issued every two months by most suppliers, based on industry calculations of average Irish household electricity use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/05\/28\/electric-ireland-to-increase-electricity-prices-by-8-domestic-gas-costs-to-climb-by-77\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Electric Ireland to increase electricity prices by 8%, domestic gas costs to climb by 7.7%Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The index includes the standing charges paid to support the national grid and distribution networks that deliver electricity to homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It would not include increases announced last week by suppliers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/esb\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/esb\/\">ESB<\/a> subsidiary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/electric-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/electric-ireland\/\">Electric Ireland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/yuno-energy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/yuno-energy\/\">Yuno Energy<\/a>, which will apply to customers\u2019 bills from July. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Europe as a whole, Dublin trails only Swiss capital Bern \u2013 which is outside the EU \u2013 where homes pay 39.19 cent a KW\/h.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is more expensive than Brussels, the EU\u2019s administrative hub, where citizens pay 35.44 cent a KW\/h.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dublin\u2019s electricity is also more expensive than Paris, where energy costs 25.44 cent a KW\/h, or Rome, where residents pay 31.02 cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The EU average for domestic electricity is 25.35 cent a KW\/h, according to the monthly index, published by energy regulators in Austria and Hungary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Commenting on the figures, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lynn-boylan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lynn-boylan\/\">Lynn Boylan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\">Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> MEP, blamed the Government\u2019s continued support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/data-centres\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/data-centres\/\">data centres<\/a>, for the fact that many Dubliners struggled with their electricity bills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis Government continues to roll out the red carpet with policy announcement after policy announcement for data centres, while struggling households are told to wait,\u201d Boylan argued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Data centres consume about a fifth of Irish electricity, a figure that could reach 30 per cent by the next decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alan-dillon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alan-dillon\/\">Alan Dillon<\/a>, Minister of State, recently told the D\u00e1il that householders do not subsidise data centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He added that large industrial users of electricity pay a higher share of network costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/daragh-cassidy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/daragh-cassidy\/\">Daragh Cassidy<\/a> of price comparison and switching website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bonkers.ie\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bonkers.ie\/\">Bonkers.ie<\/a> said the report confirmed recent figures from EU body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurostat\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurostat\/\">Eurostat<\/a> showing that the Republic had
