It was a triumphant homecoming of sorts for Oasis on Saturday night at Croke Park.<\/p>\n
80,000 people brought Dublin to a stand-still as the Gallagher brothers were given a memorable Croke Park welcome.<\/p>\n
Oasis are the biggest UK band of the past 40 years but they were shaped by Ireland and its music.<\/p>\n
Born in Manchester, Liam and Noel, of course, have very close ties back to this island. Their mother Peggy comes from Charlestown in Co. Mayo while their father Tommy comes from Duleek in Co. Meath.<\/p>\n
Oasis were thinking of Mayo during the set last night. Liam dedicated ‘Roll With It’ to the people of Mayo and Charlestown.<\/p>\n
When he asked if there were anyone from the town at the gig, there was a huge roar, and Gallagher had a brilliant response.<\/p>\n
Liam and Noel’s mother Peggy was in attendance at the concert, and Liam dedicated the song ‘Stand By Me’ to her.<\/p>\n

There was even a Mayo flag spotted in the stands.<\/p>\n

As Mayo great and Charlestown man John Casey told the Guardian this week:<\/a><\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re very, very proud of our association with the boys. They were frequent visitors here before and after fame found its way with them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Someone on Twitter described it as Mayo’s best performance in Croke Park since 1951, and they might be right.<\/p>\n
On the whole it was a hugely emotional evening for the Gallagher brothers. Oasis fans noticed Noel welling up at one point in the concert.<\/p>\n

One moment that proved divisive during the gig was the singing of \u00d3le by the Croke Park faithful. There’s been a bit of backlash to a raucous rendition of \u00d3l\u00e9 that took place in the middle of the gig.<\/p>\n

For what it’s worth, Noel seemed to approve, but perhaps this chant starting to outlive its expiry date, 35 years after it became a part of the Irish sporting songbook.<\/p>\n
