The exercise revealed how little has fundamentally changed at the Kent estate, with Benham describing the past decade as one of ‘tweaks around the edges’ rather than reinvention. Rhys highlighted 2016’s balance of fruit ripeness and acidity, evident in a mineral, tangerine-laced Guinevere, while Blanc de Blancs showed striking salinity and persistence. Rosé demonstrated the greatest stylistic evolution, and Fifty One Degrees North – Gusbourne’s prestige cuvée, created by ‘throwing everything at it’ – was especially compelling in bottle versus magnum. Most impressive of all was how youthful the 2016s still felt, suggesting they remain much closer to the middle of their journey than the end.

Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh visited Graham’s Lodge
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh during a visit to Graham’s Port Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia, as part of their visit to Portugal.
