{"id":522066,"date":"2026-06-06T18:04:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T18:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/522066\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T18:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T18:04:12","slug":"the-world-has-learned-from-the-last-ebola-outbreak-but-gaps-remain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/522066\/","title":{"rendered":"The World Has Learned From the Last Ebola Outbreak, but Gaps Remain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The response to the Ebola outbreak in East Africa, as troubled as it has been, offers signs that the world has learned key lessons from the last huge outbreak of the disease and from the Covid-19 pandemic, public health experts say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Their conclusion comes despite the fact the Bundibugyo species of the virus spread unidentified in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda for months, and that hastily erected treatment centers continue to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/30\/world\/africa\/ebola-epicenter-congo.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lack even rudimentary medical supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIf the world earned an F on the response to the West Africa outbreak \u2014 then we\u2019re at maybe a C+ now,\u201d said Suerie Moon, a global health researcher who led <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(15)00946-0\/fulltext\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">an international forensic review<\/a> of the response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which lasted two years and killed more than 11,000 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Among the improvements, she and other experts say, are increased coordination and cooperation among governments and scientists, and more investment in the infrastructure to make fast science possible.
