{"id":525085,"date":"2026-06-08T20:23:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T20:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/525085\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T20:23:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T20:23:18","slug":"el-nino-has-potential-for-all-time-record-irish-temperatures-says-cork-based-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/525085\/","title":{"rendered":"El Ni\u00f1o has potential for all-time record Irish temperatures, says Cork-based expert\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has indicated that there is an 80% chance of El Ni\u00f1o conditions developing between June and August this year, which is likely to increase the potential for above-normal global temperatures and extreme weather events, some of which could affect Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">It has prompted a warning from the UN secretary general Ant\u00f3nio Guterres that a severe El Ni\u00f1o could \u201cpour fuel on the fire of a warming world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">El Ni\u00f1o is a weather event, where unusually warm ocean waters in the central and eastern Pacific disrupt global weather patterns, influencing rainfall, temperature and storms worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Dr Kieran Hickey, senior lecturer in the department of geography at\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41850582.html\">University College Cork<\/a>, feels that the global warnings in relation to El Ni\u00f1o should be paid attention to carefully. This includes potentially bringing record high temperatures to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Massive global disruption<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIf it is extreme enough and long enough, it will cause massive global disruption. In terms of things like food production, in terms of human comfort indexes, all those things it\u2019ll have big impacts on those.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cIt will have an impact on Ireland. The potential for an all-time record temperature in Ireland, if we have a strong El Ni\u00f1o, is much, much higher.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cIreland is quite inured from it and that\u2019s one of the reasons why it\u2019s a harder sell in Ireland.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cWe\u2019re not in a country where we have horrific heat waves every summer, or where we have significant water shortages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cSo we\u2019re very lucky. But that doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re not going to be affected. The effects won\u2019t be catastrophic (in Ireland), but they could be significant.\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">With regards to the overall impact a severe El Ni\u00f1o may have on Europe or globally in the mid to longer term, Mr Hickey added: \u201cSo for Europe, it is potentially challenging. We have lots of heat waves in Europe anyway, so we don\u2019t need an extra degree too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cIn parts of the world which are already well into the 40s in summertime, or even getting into the 50s, it potentially could rise those temperatures as well.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThat would obviously be disastrous for those people.
