{"id":53070,"date":"2025-09-09T14:16:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T14:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/53070\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T14:16:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T14:16:12","slug":"us-tariffs-worsen-challenges-in-petrochemical-industry-executives-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/53070\/","title":{"rendered":"US tariffs worsen challenges in petrochemical industry, executives warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. tariffs are increasingly pressuring the already challenged <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/petrochemicals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">petrochemicals<\/a> sector and could lead to a 15% drop in the global petrochemical trade, a <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/totalenergies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TotalEnergies<\/a> executive told the APPEC conference in Singapore on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;If tariffs remain in place, petrochemicals trading will see another 15% drop on top of the 34% drop it has seen in the last five years,&#8221; TotalEnergies&#8217; head of petrochemical trading, Ganesh Gopalakrishnan, told Reuters on the sidelines of APPEC.<\/p>\n<p> Petrochemical trading houses that do not own assets are struggling to survive, said Gopalakrishnan, adding that overcapacity had led to the 34% decline in trading over the past five years.<br \/>Tariffs are also making countries more protectionist, Sanjiv Vasudeva, executive vice president and chief market officer of Haldia Petrochemicals, told the conference.<\/p>\n<p>It has become more difficult to plan investments for the short term because of overcapacity and volatility, Vasudeva said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ET logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756640479_840_118783427.cms.png\" width=\"90%\"\/>Live Events<br \/> Tariffs are also pushing Chinese products into &#8220;our traditional markets,&#8221; said Bahrin Asmawi, chief commercial officer of Malaysia&#8217;s Petronas Chemicals Group.
