Every week, you’ll probably discard takeaway<\/a> containers, several plastic bottles, and at least one empty egg<\/a> carton.<\/p>\n

There’s nothing unusual about that, as households inevitably generate some weekly waste, but clever gardener Ish has revealed an ingenious method to repurpose egg boxes and other packaging to benefit your garden<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He wrote in his video caption on TikTok<\/a>: “Everyday items you normally throw away can easily be repurposed into useful items in the garden.”<\/p>\n

Ish believes that “with a little bit of imagination,” these items can be transformed into handy tools in the garden, which will help you \u2013 and the environment.<\/p>\n

Initially, he demonstrated how a plastic bottle can become an excellent mini propagator. Ish recommends cutting it in half while keeping a small section attached.<\/p>\n

Then fill it with compost, plant in your seeds and chuck the lid on top. Ish claimed this will “create a nice humid environment” to get your seedlings started.<\/p>\n

Regarding egg cartons, Ish proposes using the bottom section as “individual pots” instead of simply discarding them.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted they “decompose very well in the soil”, so after planting seeds in them, you can cut them up and chuck them directly into the ground without any root disturbance.<\/p>\n

The carton will then “start to break down”. Ish praised this as a “great way to start off your seeds” before transferring them straight into the Earth.<\/p>\n

Finally, he demonstrated how to make use of a salad tray from a supermarket or a takeaway container. He pointed out these are “not deep enough to work as a propagator” so he uses them to check the “viability of any old or expired seeds”.<\/p>\n

Ish began by placing a “layer of kitchen roll” at the bottom of the tray, which he then saturated with water. He proceeded to add the “extra seeds that have expired”, covering them with an additional layer of paper towel.<\/p>\n

He explained this setup creates a “moist and humid environment” that should “hopefully get these started”.<\/p>\n

Ish said he can then “pick out which ones are doing okay and plant them up”, thus “not wasting any seeds that normally would’ve expired”.<\/p>\n

He encouraged viewers to repurpose these items in their gardens rather than simply throwing them away.<\/p>\n

In response to his video, one woman jokingly commented her “kitchen looks like a recycling centre” as she had been following his advice and stockpiling items instead of discarding them.<\/p>\n

Another viewer shared: “Ish, this is such good helpful information as I have a lot of old seeds, but I was going to throw them out now I’m going to try what you said.
