{"id":534145,"date":"2026-06-14T01:48:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T01:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/534145\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T01:48:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T01:48:15","slug":"call-for-council-to-build-a-swimming-pool-in-corks-fastest-growing-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/534145\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for council to build a swimming pool in Cork&#8217;s fastest-growing town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">An ongoing countywide review of council-owned leisure centres will likely decide whether it\u2019s feasible or not to build a swimming pool in Co Cork\u2019s fastest-growing town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">There is a major clamour among the ever-increasing residents of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41860107.html\">Midleton<\/a> to get such a facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Projections in the County Development Plan (CDP) show Midleton\u2019s population growing to 27,854 by 2034 \u2014making it the largest town in Co Cork \u2014 while neighbouring <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41855694.html&lt;br&gt;\">Carrigtwohill<\/a> will hit the 15,000 mark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Far smaller towns have such council-run facilities, including Dunmanway, Cobh, Youghal, Fermoy, and Mallow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Chairman of the East Cork Municipal District Council, Fine Gael councillor Rory Cocking, said the greater Midleton area is one of the fastest-growing areas outside of Dublin and the council must now plan to build a swimming pool to serve its population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Numerous representations<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He said that he\u2019d received numerous representations from constituents about this and the lack of other sporting facilities in the locality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Cocking said, in general, Ireland is lagging behind other countries when it comes to providing local authority-run swimming pools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cA recent report by Swim Ireland said that each pool in Ireland equates to 80,000 people, whereas in Scotland each pool equates to 14,000.
