Even the Wikipedia entry for Boll opens by saying that three of his films \u2014 \u201cHouse of the Dead\u201d (2003), \u201cAlone in the Dark\u201d and \u201cBloodRayne\u201d (both 2005) \u2014 are \u201cconsidered three of the worst films ever made.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>One of his former stars, late\u00a0<strong>Quentin Tarantino<\/strong>\u00a0fave Michael Madsen, called a Boll project he starred in, \u201can abomination,\u201d according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/post.spmailtechnol.com\/f\/a\/mZzbk1CHSLC72_NWmTcCJA**A\/AASU4xA*\/p6ayM8mkkzZlIBS7edDiE4Stpz80nI5uMCiqI3Eq1R8fO-ZM3K7PvuHfbfWkjcQzmX92VqDs92ojkTA4ywHY671_hiWa6TKFBIF-KhgUTY0a5MEeLgy8mMvh0-c2LUQeATZRyGQc1SfLaIGPUtvyPux-_Wr4_hvDpqK63ejJpewM_aLZ45Hg_FlkIG5fS1mIytodyezfE6o06dF-hyJaSoWoUupPzy14wVX13KopNp69DpyvvPvF7FaUItIp1NP78GPh7DIdzUOYp2svItVF4A**A__;fn5-fn4!!F0Stn7g!Ea2a-XaKFzToM0b6KHyDapydHVVP-QJgOiVB-CUW-twSfNXMzYFnhNMq8Ef_s_ootio1Kn2KFzlYStjR$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">2017 VF profile<\/a>. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>If that wasn\u2019t enough, Entertainment Weekly reported in 2008 that film fans launched an online petition demanding Boll mercifully quit the biz for his cinematic crimes. (The director said he\u2019d throw in the towel if the signatures hit 1 million.)<\/p>\n<p>But after announcing his retirement a decade ago, Boll\u2019s back with \u201cCitizen Vigilante,\u201d and he\u2019s found a new leading man in Hammer \u2014 the fallen former A-lister who was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/post.spmailtechnol.com\/f\/a\/vIVRu6C82AVo0XPzUgca2Q**A\/AASU4xA*\/R_aKuwTu23nf6lNrB_hTA_Opb7l8dTVK_c-x7oP1XOf21a3uNaF61xbUBD1W3L9_yAl4RalsPZqihTY3wkHCioJUm9kT_neV-RcahSjomcTHs1-Hu0dlMiPGsJe9olgig0ffdNr3yh8FACbf7WorezoI2FdPYVePoe11kXncE9RrL_v7Qvu9S-1nD7tG2jwwK_L5Y21zylCf2raKjJtdMA**A__;fn5-fn4!!F0Stn7g!Ea2a-XaKFzToM0b6KHyDapydHVVP-QJgOiVB-CUW-twSfNXMzYFnhNMq8Ef_s_ootio1Kn2KFyDffgye$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">dumped<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Hollywood. In the film, out June 19, Hammer stars as a vigilante killer. Like a cross between \u201cAmerican Psycho\u201d and \u201cDeath Wish,\u201d the pitch sums it up as: \u201cThe film follows an American businessman living abroad (Hammer) whose campaign against criminals turns him into a social media phenomenon while placing him increasingly at odds with law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hammer and Boll are participating in a \u201cvirtual roundtable\u201d discussion with journalists this week. And Hammer is doing a sit-down with at least one major publication as he tries to revive his acting career, we hear. <\/p>\n<p>The \u201cSocial Network\u201d star has been fielding offers\u00a0via attorney\u00a0<strong>Todd Rubenstein<\/strong>\u00a0at Yorn Levin\u00a0after he was previously let go by his publicity rep as well as his former agency, WME, amid the bizarre sex scandal that halted his career. (We hear that a former WME agent has also been advising him behind-the-scenes.)<\/p>\n<p>Hammer was accused of sexual assault, as well as infamously having cannibalistic fantasies, but he strongly denied the allegations saying it was all consensual. Los Angeles prosecutors in 2023 declined to charge the actor with any wrongdoing. And last month he was also\u00a0seen\u00a0strolling in West\u00a0Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>Tapping into Boll\u2019s long-simmering oeuvre of populist outrage, the canceled actor\u2019s new movie shows him seemingly taking on some \u201cdeep state\u201d subjects as a dapper assassin who gains a following on social media. \u201cThe state, the court, the police. You think they\u2019re here to help you\u2026 but they\u2019re here to control you,\u201d his character says. \u201cYou walk down the street and you get stabbed or robbed. What does your country do? Nothing. What if everything they ever taught you was utter nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film was shot in Croatia last year and sold at the American Film Market, (the used car lot of foreign-filmed action and horror movies in Santa Monica that attracts a particular and peculiar mix of international glamour ghouls). Back to that boxing match where he brutally knocked out his critics, Boll put the event on pay-per-view and used the footage in a movie called \u201cPostal\u201d with a one-sheet that crowed, \u201cDisgusting. Offensive. Stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He \u201cretired\u201d by uploading a YouTube video entitled, \u201cF\u2013k You All,\u201d while the tagline for one of his other films, \u201cRampage: President Down,\u201d was, \u201cF\u2013k the System.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His new Hammer movie has already reportedly been banned in Germany. <\/p>\n<p>Like Corman and Kaufman, who collectively worked with A-list movie stars like\u00a0<strong>De Niro<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Nicholson\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Costner<\/strong>\u00a0before they made it, Boll has somehow worked with actors including\u00a0<strong>Ben Kingsley, Elisabeth Moss, Jason Statham<\/strong>, Ray Liotta,\u00a0<strong>J.K. Simmons<\/strong>\u00a0and John Hurt, among others, even while The New York Times once wrote that one of his films was, \u201cso inept on every level, you wonder why the distributor didn\u2019t release it straight to video, or better, toss it directly into the trash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hammer appeared last year in the low-budget Western \u201cFrontier Crucible,\u201d which did not make much of an impression, and he has booked the thriller \u201cNight Driver\u201d as well as a film called \u201cMascotland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of Boll\u2019s past films were reportedly made so cheaply, they turned a profit on home video and his investors (\u201cdentists,\u201d he\u2019s said) did well. But after the video boom, he told VF: \u201cIt\u2019s just not worth it anymore to make a movie if you don\u2019t get any revenues. I\u2019m very happy about a lot of movies I did\u2026 At the same time, you can\u2019t live in a self-delusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s now back with the Hammer film as his latest hope. And while\u00a0<strong>Danny Boyle<\/strong>\u00a0had success with the \u201c28 Days Later\u201d franchise, Boll has his own zombie movie in the works, \u201c23 Years Later.\u201d It\u2019s a planned sequel to \u201cHouse of the Dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reps for the film and Hammer did not comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s like the plot of a B-movie in itself.
