{"id":537849,"date":"2026-06-16T10:57:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T10:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/537849\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T10:57:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T10:57:16","slug":"the-pubs-of-cork-ive-been-smitten-with-the-bar-business-since-the-start-50-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/537849\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pubs of Cork: &#8216;I&#8217;ve been smitten with the bar business since the start, 50 years ago&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">My arrival at The Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway coincides with a special anniversary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Owner Martin Maybury\u2019s parents, Sonny and Mary, bought the place in 1976, which means it is 50 years in his family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">What does 50 years in business mean to Martin?<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cSurvival!\u201d he says, laughing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Why does he think he survived so long?<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI run a good bar that serves a good pint,\u201d says Martin. \u201cHygiene is very important to us. Having a good team behind the bar that get to know people on a first-name basis is important. Our good service has a great reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The day after my visit, The Parkway Hotel was holding a 50th anniversary party with Bronco Billy and Mike Denver, as well as a family fun day and entertainment to mark the special occasion?<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cYou are welcome to come back again tomorrow though for music, dance, craic, and good fun,\u201d says Martin\u2019s sister, Sandra.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5119524_4_articleinlinemobile_4_20-1.jpg\" alt=\"Martin Maybury outside his bar, The Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway.&#9;Picture: Noel Sweeney&#10;                    \" title=\"Martin Maybury outside his bar, The Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway.&#9;Picture: Noel Sweeney&#10;                    \" class=\"card-img\"\/>Martin Maybury outside his bar, The Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway.\tPicture: Noel Sweeney<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Martin and his wife, Sheila, took over the hotel and bar from Sonny and Mary in 1991.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Sandra is well-versed in the pub\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cWhen our parents bought the Parkway Hotel, Martin was 12 years old,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was previously the Bostonian Hotel, run by the O\u2019Brien family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThe auction was on our dad\u2019s birthday, May 28, and Martin took over on his own birthday, April 28.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">There is lots of fascinating memorabilia displayed in the bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cMartin has built up a collection over the years,\u201d says Sandra. \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure there\u2019s a story behind most of the items.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cThere are also photos of staff who worked over the years in the bar. They were part of the place, and a big part of the Parkway Hotel. Our staff here are always a big part of the business.\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The locals are a big part of the bar too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThe local trade is great,\u201d says Martin. \u201cWe sponsor the local GAA team, The Dohenys. There is always a lively atmosphere in here. Something is always going on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cOur carvery is a well-known favourite with the locals, who come in regularly for the daily roast. Every day we have the same 10 or 12 people coming in for lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The Parkway is a bar for both young and old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cA lot of older people from the town meet up here for lunch,\u201d says Martin. \u201cThey enjoy the outing and the chat with each other. On Fridays the widows and widowers meet up. It\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Martin doesn\u2019t like to see anyone go hungry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cAt Christmas, we plate up dinners for people who are living alone. They really appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Martin is a fount of knowledge about the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cAs a young lad growing up here, one of my first memories is of a local character, Tom Murphy,\u201d he says. \u201cHe\u2019d call here on his way to town for the paper. At lunchtime, when he went into town to the shop for his messages, he\u2019d stop off here again. And at 5.30pm, he\u2019d come back for the third time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI can remember him wobbling home on his bike. It was all innocent fun. Tom\u2019s grandson, Kevin, worked here for us in 1993, and, like Tom, he was loved by everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Martin loves the camaraderie that is so obvious in the cosy atmosphere of the bar. He keeps the show on the road &#8211; and then some.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI recall having a christening, a communion, and a wedding party all in one day!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Back in the day, there were other parties at the Dunmanway Bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cWhen local people emigrated, they had going away parties here,\u201d adds Martin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Location is important for any pub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThe Parkway is the first stop on the way into town and the last stop on the way out,\u201d says Martin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">What is his best-seller?<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cCoors Light. It was a huge event for the town and for the bar. The annual Ballabuidhe Horse Fair in Dunmanway, that takes place on the August bank holiday, going for 100 years, is very popular and brings in a lot of people to the town and to the pub.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The fair incorporates horse racing and buying and selling of wares, entertainment, puppet shows, side-shows, and face painting for the younger people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">There was another special time Martin recalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cA Liverpool soccer team on tour came to a play match with our local soccer team. That was a huge event. The Parkway is a big sports bar. As you can see, we\u2019ve invested in a lot of screens to air all the matches. We have a top-of -the-range sound system installed. We have all the bells and whistles here!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Where does Martin like to socialise?<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIn here in the bar with my friends of course!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The Parkway dance hall on the premises saw great artists entertaining the masses over the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt\u2019s still going,\u201d says Martin. \u201cChristy Moore was here and he drank here in the bar. Joe Dolan, Christy Dignam, and Big Tom, all brought in big crowds. Brendan Grace was our favourite. We became great friends with Brendan Shine and his family. There were always great music sessions in the bar when the famous names came to town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Is Martin looking forward to a good summer?<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cTrade-wise or weather-wise?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Both.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5119530_4_articleinlinemobile_4_20-5.jpg\" alt=\"The Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway. Picture by Noel Sweeney<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen the sun shines everyone heads to the coast,\u201d says Martin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Every cloud has a silver lining.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cWhen the weather is dull or it\u2019s raining we tend to be busier, would you believe?\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Is Martin, after 50 years, still hands-on in the bar?<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cNot as much as I used to be,\u201d he admits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He has another operation going on in his native Dunmanway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI have a bus business as well,\u201d says Martin. \u201cAnd I\u2019m active in the property market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He is a man for all seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cFrom the beginning, I was smitten with the bar business,\u201d says Martin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt\u2019s in the family.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"My arrival at The Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway coincides with a special anniversary.
