{"id":539335,"date":"2026-06-17T05:45:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T05:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/539335\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T05:45:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T05:45:22","slug":"hes-my-first-son-and-i-will-miss-him-forever-funeral-for-qayyum-balogun-takes-place-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/539335\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018He\u2019s my first son and I will miss him forever\u2019: Funeral for Qayyum Balogun takes place \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Close to 100 people gathered on Tuesday to mourn Qayyum Balogun, the 21-year-old who was fatally stabbed in Dublin city centre earlier this month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was laid to rest in Newtown Cross Lawn Cemetery, just north of the town of Drogheda.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI don\u2019t have much to say but I know he\u2019s resting in the hands of the lord,\u201d Teslimot Balogun, Qayyum\u2019s mother, said after the service. \u201cI\u2019m really in pain. He\u2019s irreplaceable. He\u2019s my first son and I will miss him forever and ever. I can\u2019t bear the pain but I know God is giving me my strength.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Both Teslimot and Qayyum\u2019s stepmother, Loveth Patrick, appealed for justice for Qayyum. They described him as an \u201cinnocent boy\u201d and said  he did not deserve what happened to him. Beside them, another mourner said Qayyum was lucky that he had been blessed with \u201ctwo mums\u201d. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Qayyum Balogun was killed on Clarendon Street.\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1781675120_549_7CBUJVA3SVGLRAMEBY2BWDK42Q.jpeg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"598\"\/>Qayyum Balogun was killed on Clarendon Street. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe\u2019s a loved child,\u201d Teslimot said. \u201cHe does his own thing, he doesn\u2019t cause trouble and he loves everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Imam Nooh, of the Dundalk Muslim community, guided an Islamic burial for Qayyum, performing funeral prayers and dividing the congregation into rows of men and women. He explained that in Islam, women surround an infant as they enter the world, while men encompass the graveside as they leave. As Imam Nooh finished the prayers, men tossed handfuls of soil over Qayyum\u2019s body to fill the grave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Qayyum was born in Dublin in 2004, not long after his parents had moved to Ireland from Nigeria. Photograph: Dara Mac D\u00f3naill\/The Irish Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He had been visiting Dublin on Sunday, May 31st, for a gig in Bewley\u2019s cafe on Grafton Street alongside his 20-year-old sister Aliyah, with whom he was very close. They were seeing the Nigerian artist Famous Pluto, and it was after the gig, in the early hours of Monday, June 1st, that Qayyum was stabbed on Clarendon Street. I am coming soon\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was in his third and final year of a computer science degree at Maynooth University, and would have turned 22 in September. He did his Leaving Certificate in \u00d3 Fiaich College in Dundalk, before studying business and computing at the \u00d3 Fiaich Institute of Further Education. He worked weekends in Burger King at the Castlebellingham service station near Drogheda.
