Bowen Yang thinks Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department deserves more respect. Matt Rogers is finally willing to admit that Tangled might be better than Frozen. And somewhere in the middle of all that, the Las Culturistas<\/a> hosts teased a Culture Awards moment that apparently required law enforcement.<\/p>\n

For Yang and Rogers, those topics all belong in the same conversation.<\/p>\n

That’s also the premise behind the annual Las Culturistas Culture Awards, the Bravo and Peacock special that celebrates everything from legitimate cultural achievements to delightfully specific obsessions. This year’s nominees compete in categories ranging from Album of the Year to Best Disney Hotel for Intercourse, Sex or Lovemaking; Best Gay \u2014 Normal; and Best Thing That Could Change Your Life for Two Weeks.<\/p>\n

Ahead of Wednesday’s ceremony, the longtime friends caught up with Yahoo to discuss the pop culture moments they wanted to spotlight, the fandoms already stirring up controversy and why the annual event has evolved into a place where, as Yang puts it, “total irony and total earnestness” can live side by side.<\/p>\n

One thing they’ll defend<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every awards show needs a little controversy, and Rogers and Yang are already teasing one particularly chaotic moment from this year’s ceremony.<\/p>\n

“One of our performers actually breaks into the space and sets off all the alarms,” Rogers said. “I don’t know if everyone was OK afterward, but I know that everyone was very gagged afterward.”<\/p>\n

The pair quickly turned coy about the details.<\/p>\n

“I’m personally furious that it happened, and I wish \u2014 God, I wish \u2014 it wasn’t going into the final cut of the show,” Yang joked.<\/p>\n

“I know, but unfortunately it is,” Rogers replied.<\/p>\n

The only other clue?<\/p>\n

“Law enforcement had to get involved,” Yang deadpanned.<\/p>\n

One thing they wanted to make sure got its flowers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Part of the fun of the Culture Awards is celebrating the moments traditional awards shows might overlook. For Yang and Rogers, that meant making sure a few fan favorites got their due.<\/p>\n

“We were both obsessed with Heated Rivalry,<\/a>” Yang said, referencing the hit hockey romance series. “There was some pre-controversy about them not being represented and the show not being represented enough in the nominations. I think: Stay tuned.”<\/p>\n

“Maybe that was part of the grand design,” Rogers added.<\/p>\n

“Exactly,” Yang replied. “You ever think we had a grand design?”<\/p>\n

The pair also made sure not to snub one of television’s most talked-about guilty pleasures.<\/p>\n

“I feel like because it feels so far away, people forget that The Hunting Wives was this year,<\/a>” Yang said. “So we made sure to have a Hunting Wives presence.”<\/p>\n

And, yes, they found room for one of the year’s messiest viral moments too.<\/p>\n

“At the last second, we remembered to reference the Coldplay cheating scandal,” Rogers said.<\/p>\n

“So thank God,” Yang replied.<\/p>\n

Even the biggest Swifties aren’t immune to a delayed reaction. When asked what pop culture opinion from the other person still made them wonder how they’ve remained friends all these years, Yang and Rogers found themselves revisiting one of their biggest disagreements: Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department.<\/p>\n

Yang admitted he wasn’t immediately sold on Swift’s 2024 album.<\/p>\n

“I was not the biggest Tortured Poets Department fan when it came out,” he said. “But now I really consider it among the top Taylor Swift albums.”<\/p>\n

Rogers says he got the vibe much earlier.<\/p>\n

“We streamed it with our best friend Jared, who’s also obsessed with Taylor. We are Swifties,” Rogers said.<\/p>\n

“We’re the biggest Swifties,” Yang added.<\/p>\n

“And so we were playing it, and I felt like I immediately got the vibe,” Rogers continued. “It took them a second to get the vibe, but now that we’re all on the same page, I believe in a very happy world.”<\/p>\n

The two now agree on one thing: “We all agreed that Tortured Poets was the highlight of the Eras tour.”<\/p>\n

We’re the biggest Swifties.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Absolutely,” Yang replied.<\/p>\n

Yang was quick to clarify that he wasn’t exactly a hater.<\/p>\n

“And this is not to say that I was anti-anti,” he said. “I was just like, ‘Wait a minute. I don’t think I get it yet.'”<\/p>\n

Rogers was quick to defend his girl.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think people really understood that she had been doing so badly with the Matty Healy<\/a> of it all,” he said. “And then that album \u2026 coming after Folklore and Evermore, which people were still kind of enjoying. And Midnights, which had so much.”<\/p>\n

Now that some distance has been created, Rogers is pleased to see the conversation shifting.<\/p>\n

“So now that the dust has settled, I’m really happy to see TTPD getting our respect.”<\/p>\n

One other thing they finally agree on<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rogers has also had a change of heart on another hot-button cultural issue.<\/p>\n

“You know what? I actually am coming around on one thing,” he said. “I’m going to take this opportunity to address my sister: I think you’re right. Tangled is better than Frozen.”<\/p>\n

“Wow,” Yang replied. “This is huge.”<\/p>\n

But let’s not accuse Rogers of anti-Elsa propaganda. “Frozen is wonderful. And can I say? It doesn’t need our help. Frozen is doing so great. Frozen does not need our approval.”<\/p>\n

Still, after years of debate, he’s finally willing to concede.<\/p>\n

“The world has decided that Frozen is better, but I want to say to my sister, who I’ve argued with about this, I see your point. I think that Tangled has a point.”<\/p>\n

The Culture Awards may celebrate all corners of pop culture, but Bravo stars clearly understood the assignment when I asked who got the rowdiest.<\/p>\n

“One person that you’ll see in the cutaways and audience shots just nursing multiple cocktails and having a blast was icon nominee \u2014 perhaps winner \u2014 Ciara Miller<\/a>,” Yang said.<\/p>\n
