According to the expert, your thighs could hold the key to healthy ageing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a video uploaded to social media platform <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/instagram\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Instagram<\/a>, Doctor <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/amir-khan\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Amir Khan<\/a> explained why \u201cthicker thighs really do save lives.\u201d Dr Amir, who is best known for his appearances on <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/itv\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">ITV<\/a>, said that people with smaller thighs could have a \u201csignificantly\u201d higher risk of heart disease and premature death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This is not to do with the amount of fat on your body, but rather the amount of muscle. Dr Amir said: \u201cWe&#8217;ve been told to focus on weight to make ourselves smaller to lose inches, to get rid of fat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cBut what if one of the biggest predictors of your future health isn&#8217;t how much fat you&#8217;re carrying, it&#8217;s how much muscle you have?\u201d As part of his argument, he referenced a study, published in the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/339\/bmj.b3292\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">British Medical Journal<\/a> in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Content cannot be displayed without consent<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cA brilliantly fascinating study, published in the BMJ, followed thousands of people for over a decade and found that those with small thighs had a significantly higher risk of heart disease and premature death,\u201d he said. \u201cNow, this isn&#8217;t because bigger thighs are magically protective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s because your thighs contain some of the largest and most important muscles in your body and muscle is far more than something that helps you look toned. So, the goal isn&#8217;t to be skinny, the goal is to be strong enough to live the life you want to for as long as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He therefore recommended muscle-building exercises such as squats, walking, and using resistance bands. \u201cEvery bit of strength training is like putting money into your pension for your health and trust me, your future self will thank you for it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In the study referenced by Dr Amir, authors wrote: \u201cLow thigh circumference seems to be associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease or premature death. The adverse effects of small thighs might be related to too little muscle mass in the region.
