Dozens of men, including many wearing masks over their faces, were recorded surrounding and attacking two cars being driven by migrants during a protest over the arrest of an east Belfast man on Monday evening.<\/p>\n

A number of people attended a protest at Connswater Retail Park in the east of the city at 7pm on Monday.<\/p>\n

Vide footage shows those attending the protest holding images of the man and calling for him to be released.<\/p>\n

A short time later, video footage emerged of a man in a vehicle surrounded by a number of other men, who appeared to throw items at the car and driver and attempt to kick the vehicle.<\/p>\n

No arrests were made by PSNI officers who were in attendance at the protest, as the force says they are treating the incident as a racially motivated hate crime. A statement said officers conducted an \u201cevidence gathering operation\u201d at the scene.<\/p>\n

A PSNI spokesperson said: \u201cIt was reported that the driver of a silver coloured car was approached by members of the group. In fear, the driver then exited the vehicle, which was subsequently reported to have been damaged. <\/p>\n

\u201cA further report was received that the driver of a navy coloured car was confronted by the group but managed to drive off. There were no reports to any injuries to the driver or damage to the vehicle at this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers at the scene conducted an evidence gathering operation and will review the footage to determine any offences committed. <\/p>\n

\u201cEnquiries are continuing and at this stage, both of these incidents are being treated as racially motivated hate crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The PSNI added it would be increasing patrols in the area, which has seen several vigilante groups operating in recent weeks, questioning migrants as to their status and behaviour.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be an increased policing presence in the area, with officers continuing to engage with relevant partner agencies,\u201d the PSNI said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSelf-appointed patrols are not accepted and will not be tolerated. We would urge that anyone with concerns are reported to police, so they can be addressed by police safely and effectively.<\/p>\n
