{"id":54037,"date":"2025-09-10T00:04:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T00:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/54037\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T00:04:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T00:04:12","slug":"conradh-na-gaeilge-bids-to-intervene-in-jamie-bryson-legal-challenge-over-irish-signage-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/54037\/","title":{"rendered":"Conradh na Gaeilge bids to intervene in Jamie Bryson legal challenge over Irish signage \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">An Irish language rights group is mounting a bid to intervene in loyalist activist Jamie Bryson\u2019s legal challenge over signage at Grand Central Station in Belfast, the High Court in Belfast heard on Monday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Papers have been lodged on behalf of Conradh na Gaeilge seeking participation status at the forthcoming judicial review into a decision by Sinn F\u00e9in infrastructure minister Liz Kimmins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Bryson is challenging her approval of a \u00a3150,000 (\u20ac173,000) scheme to have Irish language signs installed at the new public transport hub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In court on Monday, a judge confirmed Conradh na Gaeilge\u2019s application to intervene will be determined before the full hearing of the case is due to get under way later this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Representing himself in the case, Mr Bryson claims the minister unlawfully breached the ministerial code by failing to refer the issue to the Executive Committee for discussion and agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under Stormont rules, any controversial or cross-cutting decision should be tabled for consideration by the full power-sharing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Bryson contends that the test was met based on the stance taken publicly by a number of senior unionist politicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The high-profile campaigner has provided the court with correspondence from DUP leader Gavin Robinson, along with other political and Orange Order representatives, to back assertions that unionists are united regarding the erection of Irish language signs at the station as a controversial move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">DUP communities minister Gordon Lyons has already been granted permission to intervene in the case.
