The museum is focusing on Norman Rockwell’s time in Vermont with a 2026 exhibition titled “Norman Rockwell: At Home in Vermont.””We see him as someone whose work is accessible,” Shelburne Museum curator Carolyn Bauer said, referring to Rockwell’s popularity in the United States. “It’s authentic. It’s humorous. It pulls at our heartstrings. Many people think of it as nostalgic. But not many people know that all of his work was grounded here in Vermont for over 14 years.””Norman Rockwell: At Home in Vermont” examines some of Rockwell’s most prolific years, Bauer explained. He lived and worked in Arlington from 1939 to 1953. The curator said Rockwell’s idealized portrayal of the Green Mountain State was just what Americans wanted at the time. She added that he had plenty of inspiration to draw from with the people and landscapes of southern Vermont.”During the period Rockwell lived here, after weathering the Great Depression, going through World War II, living in a postwar era, Vermont\u2014those values of self-reliance, democracy, being part of a close-knit community\u2014were important values that the American people were yearning for,” Bauer said in an interview with NBC5 News. ” I think are still here today, and are what made Vermont special to both Rockwell within his paintings, but also to the national imagination.”Three Rockwells donated to Shelburne Museum by Rock of Ages and its parent company, Polycor, are on view as part of the new show.”Norman Rockwell: At Home in Vermont” also showcases other artists who were working in the Bennington County community of Arlington at the time.
