{"id":54099,"date":"2025-09-10T00:40:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T00:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/54099\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T00:40:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T00:40:07","slug":"qatar-will-continue-mediation-role-despite-cowardly-attack-by-israel-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/54099\/","title":{"rendered":"Qatar will continue mediation role despite \u2018cowardly\u2019 attack by Israel \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> launched an air strike against the leaders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/hamas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/qatar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/qatar\/\">Qatar<\/a> on Tuesday, in a move the White House said did not advance Israeli or American goals in trying to bring an end to the Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Qatar, which has been mediating between Hamas and Israel, condemned the attack in Doha as \u201ccowardly\u201d and a flagrant violation of international law, claiming it was informed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a> of the attack as the explosions occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said the mediation efforts are part of the Qatari identity and nothing would deter its role in that regard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr al-Thani added that US officials first warned Qatar of the Israeli attack 10 minutes after the attack began, describing the attack as \u201ctreacherous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said \u201celiminating Hamas, which has enriched itself on the suffering of Gaza residents, is a worthy goal\u201d. But she added that bombing inside Qatar, a close ally of the US, \u201cdoes not advance Israel\u2019s or America\u2019s goals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Leavitt said the US military was notified of Israel\u2019s plans \u201cjust before the attack\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Israel was still waiting on Tuesday night for confirmation of which Hamas leaders had been killed in the attack, but Arab media outlets reported that among those present at the Doha meeting were Hamas\u2019s chief negotiator, Khalil al-Hayya, and Zaher Jabarin, who is in charge of Hamas West Bank operations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hamas, which said it holds the US jointly responsible for the attack, said five of its members were killed, including Mr Hayya\u2019s son. It said Israel had failed in what Hamas called an attempt to assassinate the group\u2019s ceasefire negotiation team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is unlikely that the Qatar strike will stop Israel from continuing with its plan to conquer Gaza City, forcing more than 800,000 residents to flee their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2025\/09\/09\/several-blasts-heard-in-qatars-doha-israeli-media-says-hamas-leadership-targeted\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Attack in Doha did not aid Israeli or US goals, says White HouseOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Israel\u2019s prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu stressed that the \u201csurgical, precision\u201d Israeli air strike targeting the \u201csavage\u201d Hamas leaders in Doha could pave the way to the \u201cimmediate\u201d end of the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThis action can open the door to the end of the war in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\">Gaza<\/a>,\u201d he said. \u201cIsrael has accepted the proposal put forward by President Trump to end the war, beginning with the immediate release of all our hostages. If President Trump\u2019s proposal is accepted, the war can end immediately,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Earlier on Tuesday, Mr Netanyahu was at the Tel Aviv district court attending a session in his corruption trial when he was handed a note informing him of a unique window of opportunity to target the senior Hamas leadership, who were gathering together in a location in the Qatari capital, Doha. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Netanyahu left the courtroom immediately and travelled to the north Tel Aviv headquarters of the Israel security agency Shin Bet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ten Israeli aircraft were already in the air, flying to Doha, some 1,800km away. The aircraft included fighter jets, refuelling aircraft, intelligence-gathering planes and drones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Hamas leaders were discussing how the organisation should respond to the latest US principles presented to the sides to end the 23-month Gaza war. Einav Zangauker, whose son Matan is held by Hamas, said Mr Netanyahu may have killed her son by striking Hamas officials in Qatar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI am trembling with fear,\u201d she said. \u201cIt could be that at this very moment the prime minister has actually assassinated my Matan, sealed his fate. Why does he insist on blowing every chance at a deal?
