{"id":541187,"date":"2026-06-18T07:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T07:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/541187\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T07:16:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T07:16:12","slug":"an-post-board-in-row-with-patrick-odonovan-over-pay-for-new-ceo-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/541187\/","title":{"rendered":"An Post board in row with Patrick O\u2019Donovan over pay for new CEO \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A row has erupted between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-post\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-post\/\">An Post<\/a> and  Minister for Communications <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-odonovan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-odonovan\/\">Patrick O\u2019Donovan<\/a> over pay for its new chief executive and key elements of its  development strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Times understands directors at the commercial State company held a special board meeting last Friday and have written to O\u2019Donovan setting out their concerns, which also include delays in Government authorisation to raise the company\u2019s borrowing limit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The board had proposed a salary rate of about \u20ac360,000 per year for the next chief executive of An Post, who will take over from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/06\/09\/david-mcredmond-gets-ready-for-life-after-an-post\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/06\/09\/david-mcredmond-gets-ready-for-life-after-an-post\/\">David McRedmond<\/a> in the coming weeks. The Irish Times reported last month that An Post was lining up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fergal-leamy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fergal-leamy\/\">Fergal Leamy<\/a>, the former head of Coillte and Glen Dimplex, to become its next chief executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The remuneration proposal for the next chief executive was put forward under a new pay determination system by  which boards in commercial State companies opt for a point on a pay band provided by the Government. Line Ministers, in turn, have to give formal approval for the proposed salary rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, informed sources said O\u2019Donovan did not accept the \u20ac360,000 pay proposal and instead opted for a lower rate of about \u20ac270,000. This figure was endorsed by Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers on June 9th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McRedmond\u2019s  basic pay rate is set at about \u20ac250,000, according to the company\u2019s most recently published accounts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Donovan\u2019s move to opt for the lower pay rate for the new chief executive is understood to have  angered  the An Post board, which held the  special meeting on the issue last Friday as well as a regular meeting on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The board is also understood to be anxious for the Minister to authorise an increase in its existing borrowing limit, which has been set at \u20ac75 million since 1984, as well as approve plans for a  centralised sorting office facility which it believes is key for its future development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Times understands that in a letter to the Minister, directors of An Post maintained that the delay was undermining the board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/06\/17\/home-price-inflation-weakens-to-slowest-rate-in-more-than-two-years\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Irish house price inflation weakens to slowest rate in more than two yearsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The letter is also believed to state that An Post\u2019s business was coming under increased pressure and that this left the board\u2019s fiduciary duties and financial responsibilities in question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Donovan confirmed this week that he had approved a new pay rate for the incoming An Post chief executive and expected a deal would be concluded imminently. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There is a concern at political level about the impact of authorising a higher pay rate against the backdrop of increased pressure on public service pay as the Government prepares to enter talks on a new deal with more than 400,000 State employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Tuesday O\u2019Donovan said his department had \u201cspent a considerable amount of time\u201d on the An Post pay issue. He said the issue was being considered in the context of \u201cwhat I think we know are going to be testing times ahead in terms of pay demands across the public sector\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement on Wednesday, the Department of Communications, Culture and Sport said its Minister engaged with An Post on a range of matters on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe remuneration level for the new CEO position in An Post is a matter for the board of An Post to consider.
