{"id":542554,"date":"2026-06-19T00:10:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T00:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/542554\/"},"modified":"2026-06-19T00:10:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T00:10:14","slug":"health-union-official-appointed-as-new-general-secretary-of-asti-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/542554\/","title":{"rendered":"Health union official appointed as new general secretary of ASTI \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/asti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/asti\">ASTI<\/a>) has confirmed the appointment of Linda Kelly as its new general secretary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kelly, who succeeds Kieran Christie, is currently national secretary for health and social care professionals, pharmacy and statutory regulation at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/forsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/forsa\">F\u00f3rsa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A native of Cork, she is a graduate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-college-cork-ucc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-college-cork-ucc\/\">University College Cork<\/a> (UCC), where she studied Speech and Language Therapy, and the Institute of Public Administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She was elected equality officer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/union-of-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/union-of-students\/\">Union of Students in Ireland<\/a> (USI, now AMLE) then a project officer with Ahead, which works to support disabled people in education and employment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She joined F\u00f3rsa in 2012, initially as an organiser in its education department and has risen through the ranks since to co-lead its health division, which has more than 30,000 members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She has been involved in a number of disputes during her time with the union, including the recent strike action by perfusionists based at the Mater and four other hospitals across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She succeeds Christie, who had previously been a teacher with a long history of activism in the ASTI itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The union represents secondary teachers across the country and had 20,212 members at the end of 2024, up from 18, 872 the year before.
