US<\/a> president Donald Trump<\/a> and Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu<\/a> appear increasingly at odds after Washington reportedly pressured Israel<\/a> to renew a fragile ceasefire with Iran<\/a>-backed Hizbullah<\/a> after an escalation in hostilities tested the new agreement to deal to end the Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n

A meeting due to take place on Friday between the US and Iran in Switzerland<\/a> to discuss implementation of the new deal was cancelled when Hizbullah killed four Israeli soldiers and Israel carried out a wave of retaliatory air strikes in southern Lebanon that killed at least 47 people.<\/p>\n

Trump told \u200cNBC News in a phone interview that \u200bhe had spoken with Israel on Friday \u200band asked them to \u2060agree to a \u200cceasefire \u200cwith Hizbullah.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou \u2060just \u200bgotta calm down \u200bsometimes and \u200cuse your head,\u201d Trump \u200bwas quoted as \u2060saying \u2060on \u200bX by an NBC reporter, who added that Trump declined to \u200cspecify whether \u2060he had spoken with Netanyahu directly.<\/p>\n

In a separate interview, Trump also told repeated his view that if it weren\u2019t for him \u201cIsrael would not exist today\u201d. <\/p>\n

He made the remarks to US news outlet Axios, which released snippets of a 45-minute interview with the US president.<\/p>\n

Trump added that his relationship with Netanyahu was \u201cgood, but we have to keep him a little bit sane\u201d. <\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s ruling Likud party, meanwhile, has scrapped a planned election campaign highlighting the Israeli prime minister\u2019s close ties with the US president.<\/p>\n

Analysts say the special relationship built on \u201cshared values\u201d has soured and Trump, believing Netanyahu was deliberately trying to scuttle the emerging deal, told US media outlets recently that the Israeli prime minister had \u201cno f***ing judgment\u201d and needed to be \u201cmore rational\u201d.<\/p>\n

Further proof of the tense state of bilateral relations came when Trump said on Thursday that he would \u201cmost likely\u201d endorse Netanyahu in Israel\u2019s autumn elections, but wanted to see who else was running against him first.<\/p>\n

Vice-president JD Vance, in his press conference on Thursday, berated the Israeli ministers who had criticised Trump over the memorandum of understanding to end the conflict. <\/p>\n

\u201cDonald J Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across the political spectrum in Israel, the US-Iran agreement has been condemned as a capitulation that fails to achieve even a single strategic achievement.<\/p>\n

While the reaction of Netanyahu has been relatively mild, stressing that even in the best of families there are occasional differences of opinion, his leading supporters in the media, particularly on the right-wing Channel 14 TV station, have not held back. <\/p>\n

The agreement was described as a \u201csell-out\u201d and a \u201csurrender\u201d with Israel \u201cbeing thrown under the bus\u201d.<\/p>\n

The US president\u2019s relations with Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni<\/a> are also under stain after she accused her one-time close ally of fabricating a story about her.<\/p>\n

Trump told an Italian TV channel that she had \u201cbegged\u201d him to take a photo with \u200cher at the G7<\/a> summit.<\/p>\n

Meloni said she was \u201castonished\u201d by his comments, which were \u201ccompletely made up\u201d. She also chided him for acting with far greater deference to the enemies of the West than he does towards old, established allies.<\/p>\n

Underscoring how much Trump\u2019s comments have angered Meloni\u2019s government, Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani announced he was cancelling a planned visit to the US \u200bnext week.<\/p>\n
