Nearly three weeks after \u201cEuphoria\u201d wrapped up its run on HBO<\/a>, creator Sam Levinson spoke out in support of one of the final season\u2019s most controversial storylines.<\/p>\n

As fans of the show well know, Sydney Sweeney, who played Cassie Howard on all three seasons of \u201cEuphoria,\u201d faced an immense amount of blowback this spring as her character embarked on an OnlyFans career<\/a> (with the help of Alexa Demie\u2019s Maddy Perez).<\/p>\n

Yet, Levinson defended on Friday\u2019s episode of \u201cReal Time With Bill Maher\u201d that this particular storyline felt timely, given OnlyFans is now \u201ca massive enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at Only Fans, it is making as much money as Hollywood. I mean, essentially it\u2019s on par,\u201d Levinson said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a niche business, it is a massive enterprise. And so if you\u2019re young, you\u2019re going \u2026 \u2018I don\u2019t want to go work in a nine to five at this place or that thing. Well, maybe I can just start taking photos of myself?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

As Levinson went on, he noted that he wanted to explore \u201cthe long-term consequences of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happens when you know, as a young person, you\u2019re on Instagram \u2026 and you\u2019re told that you\u2019re the product, you\u2019re the brand, and now you\u2019re 18 years old, and you\u2019re going well, \u2018How do I make money?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I just thought chasing that desire, that kind of fast cash, was an interesting thing to kind of explore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levinson acknowledged that they \u201ccaught a lot of criticism for it,\u201d but also wondered if they would \u201cget the same criticism\u201d if they actually \u201caffirmed this life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, we take a fairly critical look at it,\u201d he noted. \u201cIt hollows out the individual. You know, you\u2019re constantly just depending on the likes and external validation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Host Bill Maher appeared to co-sign this sentiment, noting that he was particularly impressed with Demie\u2019s performance, calling her \u201cthe moral center\u201d of the narrative.<\/p>\n

\u201cI forget what the scene was, but she says, I guess to the other one \u2026 \u2018Because I\u2019m not a hooker,\u201d Maher added. \u201cAnd I feel like that said it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was managing the girls, which is an all new industry,\u201d Levinson reminded Maher. \u201cIt\u2019s sort of light pimping.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levinson explained that another layer to this whole situation is social media, adding, \u201cI mean, if you\u2019re constantly taking photos of yourself and selling yourself online, it\u2019s the natural evolution of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the sit down, Levinson doubled down on his decision to end \u201cEuphoria\u201d with Season 3, noting it felt like \u201ca natural conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seasons 1-3 of \u201cEuphoria\u201d are available to stream on HBO Max.<\/p>\n
