{"id":54637,"date":"2025-09-10T06:45:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T06:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/54637\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T06:45:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T06:45:07","slug":"poland-condemns-act-of-aggression-after-army-shoots-down-russian-drones-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/54637\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland condemns \u2018act of aggression\u2019 after army shoots down Russian drones \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poland\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poland\">Poland<\/a> said it scrambled its own and Nato air defences to shoot down drones over its territory after repeated violations of its airspace during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\">Russian <\/a>attack on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a> in what the Polish army called an \u201cact of aggression\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It marks the first time in the war that Warsaw has engaged Russian assets in its airspace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cAn operation is under way related to the repeated violation of Polish airspace,\u201d Polish prime minister<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-tusk\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-tusk\"> Donald Tusk <\/a>wrote on X early on Wednesday. \u201cThe military has used weaponry against the objects.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he informed the Nato secretary general Mark Rutte about actions undertaken by the Polish side. He also said he was in \u201cconstant contact\u201d with Poland\u2019s newly elected president Karol Nawrocki and the operational commander.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Poland\u2019s military command said drones repeatedly violated Polish airspace during the Russian attack in western Ukraine. Radars tracked more than 10 objects and those that could pose a threat were \u201cneutralised\u201d, the command said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSome of the drones that entered our airspace were shot down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Polish military says the \u201coperations of Polish and allied aviation related to violations of Polish airspace have concluded\u201d but that the search for fallen drones and their impact site is ongoing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a post on X, it urged people not to touch or approach and unknown object or debris, warning that they may contain hazardous materials. It also thanked Nato and the Royal Netherlands Air Force for their help in ensuring \u201csafety in Polish skies\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Police discovered a damaged drone in the eastern Polish village of Czosnowka, police from the Lublin region announced on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Operations at airports in Warsaw, Modlin, and Rzeszow have resumed, while the airport in Lublin remains temporarily closed, a spokesman for the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PAZP) told private television station TVN24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday that at least eight drones had targeted Poland during Russian attacks overnight that deployed a total of around 415 drones and over 40 missiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cToday there was another step of escalation \u2013 Russian-Iranian \u2018shaheds\u2019 operated in the airspace of Poland, in Nato airspace. It was not just one \u2018shahed\u2019 that could be called an accident, but at least eight strike drones aimed toward Poland,\u201d Mr Zelenskiy wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The first reports about possible violations of the Polish airspace emerged late on Tuesday night after Ukraine\u2019s air force said that Russian drones had entered Poland\u2019s airspace, posing a threat to the city of Zamo\u015b\u0107. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The alleged incursion comes a day after Mr Nawrocki warned that Russian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> was ready to invade more countries after launching his war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe do not trust Vladimir Putin\u2019s good intentions,\u201d Mr Nawrocki told reporters Tuesday at a press conference in Helsinki.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people, a few months into Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
