{"id":548644,"date":"2026-06-22T18:00:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T18:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/548644\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T18:00:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T18:00:22","slug":"aer-lingus-apologises-to-canadian-family-for-refund-delay-after-removal-from-flight-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/548644\/","title":{"rendered":"Aer Lingus apologises to Canadian family for refund delay after removal from flight \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\">Aer Lingus <\/a>has apologised to a Canadian family for the delay in issuing refunds after insisting an older member of their travelling party was removed from their flight home from Dublin to Toronto just before take-off because the crew deemed him too unwell to fly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The decision to remove Michael Rosien from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\">the flight <\/a>in April came despite the fact that he had received a \u201cfit to fly\u201d letter from his doctor and all the necessary documentation had been sent to Aer Lingus in advance, said his wife, Alexandra. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said they had travelled \u201con what was to be our last vacation to remember as my husband has vascular dementia\u201d and added that while in Ireland, they were injured in a car crash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She suffered an ankle fracture and her husband was hospitalised with multiple rib and vertebrae fractures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAfter some time in hospital, he received a \u2018fit to fly\u2019 from his doctor,\u201d she said. \u201cWe gave all necessary documents to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\">Aer Lingus <\/a>[and] they told us we were good to go. We were booked to fly back to Canada on a flight April 23rd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said they \u201dwere treated wonderfully by special services <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\">at the airport <\/a>and boarded the plane\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He husband was sleeping in the business class cabin when they were told they would have to leave the aircraft as the crew were concerned about her husband\u2019s health. \u201cWe were treated like criminals. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\">Aer Lingus <\/a>even called the Garda to the gate,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe were all taken back to Aer Lingus\u2019s main desk and questioned for hours [and] during that time, and with that trauma, my husband\u2019s condition worsened. By the end of the day he had to be transported to a hospital in Dublin.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said he had to remain in hospital while the rest of the family travelled home the following day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her husband was issued a new ticket and told it would have to be used within a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">By the middle of May it became clear he would not be able to travel before the new ticket expired, so the family requested a refund of his ticket. But the request was refused by the airline, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI have requested a refund multiple times and have filed a formal complaint. Still they refuse. All I wanted was the ticket price refunded. If they would have let us fly home [on] April 23rd, he would be in Canada getting well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\">Aer Lingus <\/a>spokeswoman said the airline \u201crecognises the difficulties encountered by this family during their journey. The safety and wellbeing of our customers is always our highest priority and our flight operations team made the difficult decision that the passenger should not fly due to health concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She added that Aer Lingus \u201csincerely regret the delay in processing this customer\u2019s refund request, which has now been prioritised.
