Markets greeted the end of the Iran conflict<\/a> with relief, as energy prices<\/a> retreated and investors moved on to more familiar concerns.<\/p>\n

The settlement is widely seen as a major climbdown by the Trump administration, leaving Iran in a better position than it was before the war, and arguably reinforcing Tehran\u2019s awareness of its leverage over global energy flows via the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> for any future confrontation.<\/p>\n

Not everyone had envisaged such an underwhelming finale. \u201cOne of the most one-sided wars in history that will end well for the US<\/a> and the world,\u201d said hedge fund manager Bill Ackman<\/a> at the end of March. <\/p>\n

He also praised Donald Trump<\/a> in effusive terms, saying he would \u201cgo down in history as one of the greatest and most consequential presidents we have ever had\u201d, whose \u201cbold and consequential decisions\u201d were made \u201cfor the benefit of future generations\u201d, before concluding: \u201cGod bless our nation, our military and our president.\u201d<\/p>\n

One half-expected the statement to end with a chorus of \u201cUSA! USA!\u201d<\/p>\n

Stocktake will give Ackman his due in one respect: he was bullish at March 30th\u2019s market bottom, saying it was \u201cone of the best times in a long time to buy quality\u201d.<\/p>\n
