(Four Corners: Jerry Rickard)

“Whether it’s appropriate or not really is an individual decision”, according to Sally Gainsbury, professor in psychology and the director of the Gambling Research and Policy Unit at the University of Sydney/Gadigal lands.

She says for some people who gamble, “they do so without any negative consequences”.

“But it’s been estimated that around half of people who gamble on a regular basis actually do experience some harms.”

Kate Fennessy, a clinical psychologist who runs the gambling treatment program at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, says one of the main factors that can lead to gambling addiction is “having an early win that feels like a big win”.

“Thoughts of feeling lucky or that you have an early gift, it can keep people going back again and again for a long time,” she told Life Matters.

But she says development of any type of addiction can be “multifactorial”.

“If it’s normalised in certain cultures and within families, if it’s very available, if your mates are all doing it, those are all factors that can lead to greater harms.”

What are the early signs of gambling harm?

“Psychological stress” is an early red flag that things are not right, according to Professor Gainsbury.

“You’re feeling guilty because you’ve neglected something else that’s important in your life [while gambling],” she says.

Sally Gainsbury says there is no single action that crosses the line from entertainment or a pastime into being harmful.
