{"id":552971,"date":"2026-06-25T06:10:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T06:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/552971\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T06:10:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T06:10:12","slug":"earths-vital-signs-are-flashing-red-and-crying-out-for-attention-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/552971\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth\u2019s vital signs are flashing red and crying out for attention \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Imagine if your entire family was at the bedside of a loved one, but instead of listening to the doctor warning that the patient was in terminal decline, everyone preferred to quarrel over the wilting grapes instead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Perhaps that is not the perfect analogy, but there is no doubt that the Earth\u2019s vital signs \u2013 key measurements that reflect the state of life-sustaining functions \u2013 are flashing red and setting off every possible alarm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth-system-science-data.net\/about\/news_and_press\/2026-06-11_indicators-of-global-climate-change-2025-annual-update-of-key-indicators-of-the-state-of-the-climate-system-and-human-influence.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.earth-system-science-data.net\/about\/news_and_press\/2026-06-11_indicators-of-global-climate-change-2025-annual-update-of-key-indicators-of-the-state-of-the-climate-system-and-human-influence.html\">latest report<\/a> from a consortium of 70 scientists contributing to the Indicators of Global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/\">Climate<\/a> Change Initiative found that the Earth\u2019s energy imbalance grew further in 2025, and its 10-year average reached a record high. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So what? If it\u2019s just the surface temperature increase that we should be directly concerned with, why does this imbalance matter? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unfortunately, the increase in surface temperature is already a cause for alarm. At 1.37 degrees higher than the historical average [a conservative assessment], global warming directly attributable to human activities is fast approaching the 1.5 degree \u201cguardrail\u201d advised by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But a surface temperature increase is not the only measurement that we should be worried about, and it is just one of several key indicators of Earth system disruption. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Earth energy imbalance is an estimate of the surplus heat that is stored in the oceans, ice, land and atmosphere due to global warming. It is a vital indicator of locked-in temperature increases that will be impossible to reverse on any meaningful timescale. And this imbalance is growing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report found the long-term average energy imbalance has risen significantly, moving from an average of 0.79W\/m2 (watts per square metre) over the 2006\u20132018 period to 1.12W\/m2 for the next period ending in 2025. This represents an approximately 40 per cent increase in the rate of heat accumulation in just over half a decade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/05\/06\/ireland-climate-change-eu-copernicus-el-nino-extreme-weather-heat\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We are now experiencing the terrible cost of the feedback loops of climate changeOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The laws of physics require that this trapped energy must go somewhere \u2013 there is no magic technology that can suck it up or push it out into space. Thermal inertia guarantees that even if atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations were stabilised tomorrow, global temperatures would continue to rise for decades as the ocean (which has absorbed more than 90 per cent of all the excess energy caused by the greenhouse effect) slowly releases this stored energy back into the broader climate system, making long-term warming effectively irreversible on human timescales. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The energy imbalance means that global temperatures could rise at even higher rates in the future, even if we start to reduce annual emissions. However, emissions \u2013 from burning fossil fuels, livestock and land use changes \u2013 are continuing to increase. Latest estimates measure them at 56.8GtCOe (gigatonnes) for 2025 and up to <a href=\"https:\/\/climatetrace.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">60.6 GtCO2e<\/a> when taking methane leaks into account \u2013 the highest on record. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even though there are signs of structural change in the energy system, rising global energy demand continues to outpace deployment of renewables. Carbon dioxide \u2013 the main greenhouse gas \u2013 continues to accumulate rapidly in the atmosphere, further narrowing the remaining carbon budget required to stabilise global temperatures. Scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth-system-science-data.net\/about\/news_and_press\/2026-06-11_indicators-of-global-climate-change-2025-annual-update-of-key-indicators-of-the-state-of-the-climate-system-and-human-influence.html#:~:text=The%20platform%20will%20be%20available,the%20publication%20of%20IPCC%20reports.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth-system-science-data.net\/about\/news_and_press\/2026-06-11_indicators-of-global-climate-change-2025-annual-update-of-key-indicators-of-the-state-of-the-climate-system-and-human-influence.html#:~:text=The%20platform%20will%20be%20available,the%20publication%20of%20IPCC%20reports.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.earth-system-science-data.net\/about\/news_and_press\/2026-06-11_indicators-of-global-climate-change-2025-annual-update-of-key-indicators-of-the-state-of-the-climate-system-and-human-influence.html#:~:text=The%20platform%20will%20be%20available,the%20publication%20of%20IPCC%20reports.\">now estimate<\/a> that the carbon budget consistent with a 50 per cent chance of remaining below 1.5 degrees of warming will be exhausted in just three years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Planet Earth is a big place; too big for our small brains to grasp what is unfolding in real time all around us. We react to immediate danger and proximate disasters and ignore slow-moving catastrophes. But the temperature anomalies, wind extremes, sea-level rise, off-the-chart rainfall events, marine heatwaves, floods and tidal surges are all happening as previous IPCC reports warned they would. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The EU\u2019s Copernicus Earth monitoring and observation programme reported that the pronounced <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/what-do-we-know-about-europes-early-and-intense-heatwave-may-2026\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/what-do-we-know-about-europes-early-and-intense-heatwave-may-2026\">heatwave in northern Europe<\/a> in May saw anomalies in which daily average temperatures reached more than 10 degrees above average in parts of France, England and Wales and more than 100 heat-related deaths in Spain. Copernicus scientists have concluded that this heatwave event is consistent with <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/esotc\/2025\/why-europe-warming-so-quickly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rapid warming<\/a>. Recall that this corresponds to a global temperature increase of less than 1.4 degrees, but much more warming than that is in the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/05\/30\/our-climate-is-on-steroids-the-extremes-of-recent-days-will-become-the-norm\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland\u2019s climate is on steroids. The extremes of recent days will become the normOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">What all of this means for Ireland depends on how all this ocean heat and resulting thermal expansion (water expands when heated) drives extreme weather and sea-level rise along our coast, and in the longer term, the extent to which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/2025\/02\/26\/amoc-will-weaken-but-may-not-collapse-this-century-study-finds\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/2025\/02\/26\/amoc-will-weaken-but-may-not-collapse-this-century-study-finds\/\">Amoc<\/a> weakens.
